Chemistry SCH3U-B
Chemistry SCH3U-B, Unit 2, Lesson 6: Key Questions
19. Based on the observations provided in the kitchen lab, “Developing an Activity Series”, the order of the four metals from most reactive to least reactive is: zinc, iron, nickel, copper.
Zinc is the most reactive. The reaction occurred quickly… small bubbles (hydrogen) appeared straight away. As the reaction continued, larger bubbles (more hydrogen) appeared. At the end of the experiment, the nail was completely rusted. Hydrogen displaced the zinc.
Iron had no visible reaction after 1 hour, so there wasn’t as an immediate of a reaction as with the zinc. The reaction then escalated after four hours, and after a 1 day period, hydrogen displaced the iron and left the nail rusted.
The reaction of the nickel was even slower than that of the iron; there was no immediate reaction and no visible change until after a one day period, when it appeared darker and slightly tarnished (not as violently corroded as the zinc and iron).
The penny shows no reaction because it is below hydrogen in the activity series. Hydrogen does not displace copper.

22.
a. Word equation for the burning of carbon: carbon+ oxygen  carbon monoxide Balanced chemical equation for the burning of carbon: 2C(s) + O2(g)  2CO(g) Word equation for the burning of sulphur: sulphur + oxygen  sulfur dioxide Balanced chemical equation for the burning of sulphur: S(s) + O2(g)  SO2(g)
b. SO2 is a byproduct of the burning of coal. It is a very acidic oxide, producing sulphurous and eventually sulphuric acid when mixed with water, contributing to acid rain. In areas where there is a large amount of SO2 present, the rain pH can be as low as 3.5 whereas natural rain is about 5.6. This is 100 times more acidic.
c. This harmful effect is noted by: Sulfur dioxide + water + sulphurous acid  sulphuric acid SO2 + H20  H2SO3  H2SO4

An elements¡¦ reaction to certain substances may be predicted by its placement on the Periodic Table of Elements. Across a period, an element on the left will react with more vigor than one on the right, of the same period. Vertically, as elements are sectioned into groups, the reaction of each element increases as you move down in the same group. With this in mind, the reactions of the substances involved in this experiment may be hypothesized, observed, and validated.…

Most people would use a lighter or a match to start a fire. Matches allow for a portable, easy-to-use source of fire. Many chemical reactions generate heat and fire, but matches are a fairly recent invention. Matches are also an invention you probably wouldn't choose to duplicate if civilization ended today or you were stranded on a desert island. The chemicals involved in modern matches are generally safe, but that wasn't always the case. The material of making a matches is red phosphorus.…
