Chemistry Graphing
DIRECTIONS 1. USING GRAPH PAPER construct the following graphs BY HAND. Make sure to label the axes (include units) and give each graph a title. Make sure to use an appropriate scale. 2. Answer the questions. 3. USING LOGGER PRO construct the same graphs. Compare your results.

1. Several samples of pure tin were weighed and placed in a graduated cylinder filled with water to measure their volume by water displacement. Show the relationship between the mass and volume of the samples using a line graph. The volume should be on the x-axis and the mass should be on the y-axis.

Volume (cm3) | Mass (g) | 0.53 | 2.41 | 0.72 | 3.27 | 1.05 | 4.77 | 1.21 | 5.49 | 1.36 | 6.17 | 1.60 | 7.26 | 1.95 | 8.85 | 2.00 | 9.08 |

Answer the following question using the graph.

a. What is the slope of the line? Make sure to include the units in your answer. 4.53 cm3 /g

b. What mass would you expect for a 1.50 cm3 sample of pure tin? About 6.7 g

c. What mass would you expect for a 0.20 cm3 sample of pure tin? About 1.3 g

2. Students calculate the rate of reaction using several different concentrations of acid. When the rates are reported in scientific notation it is important to make sure that all the values on the rate axis are report to the same power of ten. You may have to make all the values times ten to the fourth power to draw this graph. Don’t connect the dots; instead draw either a “best fit” line or a smooth carver for the following data.

Concentration of HCl (M) | Rate of reaction (g/sec) | Rates of Reaction(x 10-4 g/sec) | 0.50 | 3.9 x 10-5 | 3.9 x 10-9 | 1.0 | 1.8 x 10-4 | 1.8 x 10-8 | 3.0 | 7.5 x 10-4 | 7.5 x 10-8 | 6.0 | 1.43 x 10-3 | 1.43 x 10-7 |

What would you expect for the reaction if 4.0 M acid had been used? About 9 x 10-8
