Chapter three of Animal Wise centers mostly around the well-known African gray parrot named Alex. Virginia Morell went to Pepperberg’s lab at Brandeis University in Massachusetts and observed Alex’s daily routines. Morell got to experience the model/rival technique, which Pepperberg used to teach labels to Alex. The technique in its simplest form would go as such: Alex would be perched between two people. The first person would hold up an item like wood and would ask the second person what it is. The second person would reply by saying “wood” in a drawn out singing-like manner. This process would be repeated several times until one asks Alex the question and he would reply, “wood” in the same manner. Pepperberg proved scientists and linguists…

A leopard gecko is a small great animal who lives in a desert area. Many of the leopard geckos have tails, which is what helps them catch food for energy. As many reptiles the leopard gecko's can last many days without eating and their tail is a great way for them to store fats and food for them to stay moving. Their tails also help them to protect themselves from predators as they divide their tail in sections and if a predator grabs the gecko by its tail they can easily let go of that section of their tail and escape. Soon after their escape their tail will disintegrate. Leopard gecko's also camouflauge to their environment as they have yellowish skin with dots which help them camouflauge themselves in their desert environment. This adaptation…

The Eastern Gorilla faces many challenges due to the destruction of its habitat and poaching. The Eastern Gorilla is the largest living primate and has now joined three other great ape species as critically endangered on The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN)’s red list of endangered species. This is extremely worrying to many government and environmental leaders because there are only about five thousand Eastern Gorillas left in the wild. Furthermore, of all of the great ape species- the Eastern Gorilla, Western Gorilla, Bornean Orangutan, Sumatran Orangutan, Chimpanzee, and Bonobo- only the Chimpanzee and Bonobo are not considered critically endangered; however, they are listed as endangered.…

As young children we all dream to be that special animal the soars through the sky, swims deep in the sea, or "roars" like the king of the jungle. If I could be any animal, I would be a wild mustang. The wild mustang is a endangered species who runs freely across the open plains of North America. The wild horse symbolizes freedom and power. They have no one to answer to and no rules to fallow. Wild mustangs were first introduced to America by Spanish Conquistadors in the sixteenth century. The word mustang is derived from the Spanish saying "mustengo" which means "ownerless beast" or "stray horse." Mustangs are are fourteen to fifteen hands tall, which means that they are a medium-sized horse and they weigh about 800 pounds. Mustangs come in…

Ever since the devil facial tumor disease (DFTD) emerged in the mid-1990’s, the Tasmanian devils’ population has been on a rapid decline. As these devils are a keystone species of their ecosystem, their decline has allowed non-native predators such as cats and black rats to flourish and decrease the number of native prey. This effect is an example of the top-down keystone predator hypothesis. Due to the downfall of the devils, Australia’s once most intact faunal communities has diverted into an invasive state with severe biodiversity loss.…

The most peculiar animal behavior I was able to observe during my stay at the zoo was in the coyote habitat. As soon as I arrived, I noticed that the two coyotes were pacing around their entire habitat. At first it was amusing seeing them “race” against each other and the high amount of motion that was visible, nevertheless, I quickly realized that there could also be a neurological and psychological reasoning behind their motions. It was at this point that my emotions went from excitement to distress. I immediately tried looking for a zookeeper to ensure the comfort and safety of the animals, however, I wasn’t able to find one near the habitat.…
