Every animal relies of some type of animal behavior at some point in their life. Whether the animal defends itself, tries to get food or shelter, or trying to mate. Behavior gives animals strength, confidence, and a way of life. Social animal groups represent a great amount of behavior to encounter on an everyday basis. The African lion or Panthera leo, requires certain behaviors to sustain life. Being one of Africa’s largest and most predacious animals, specific needs are required for the animal in order to protect, survive, and accomplish life. Due to large sizes in body shape and groups their ability to prey on other animals remains very high. Predation requires a huge amount of work in order to be successful. Being able to prey on animals whether in groups or not stands as an important part of every lion’s life no matter the age, gender, or size. Just like any other animal, the African lion has specific classifications because of the species. For example, the main classifications of an African lion results in Kingdom Animalia, Phylum Chordata, Class Mammalia, Order Carnivora, Family Felidae, Genus Panthera, and Species leo. In fact, sub classifications can be included throughout the main classifications. Costs include giving up something due to something else. For example, lions continue to hunt at night which makes them nocturnal hunters (Packer et al 2011). Night anywhere can have fear and tragedies, but in Africa many tragedies can occur at night. Lions often can result in death from other animals or hunters. The cost of nocturnal hunting can result in injury or death to a single lion or many lions. Unfortunately, an African lion’s way of hunting cannot be changed. Limited resources while hunting can result from being in a larger social group. Resources such as food and water may not sustain life to all of the lions in a pride. Some with die from scarcity which means the lack of resources required for survival. Lastly, disease and illnesses contribute to a social group’s tremendously. One of the worse things that can happen to a group would involve the spread of diseases amongst them. Diseases will eventually result into death and possibly kill of a single pride or group.
