“Rob Pent retires from the NBA at the peak of his career to care for sick daughter.” This was the headline for every sports network that existed. Many authors/film makers realize that sometimes, in order to make a point, an idea is best conveyed through a stirring of the audience’s pathos, or feelings. An audience whose emotions have been affected is more likely to remember a message and take it into consideration. Hoop Dreams, a documentary by Steve James, is an apt example that employs heavy use of pathos in order to present its theme. The documentary follows two boys through their high school years in Chicago as they pursue their life dreams of becoming two players in the NBA. It is hard not to become engaged in the film as the boys must overcome many hurdles in order to work towards their dream. The filmmakers strive to stir the emotions of the audience by giving much…

Lastly this book shows how sports can greatly affect people 's lives. People can be affected for the greater, worse, or sports help them find abetted place. Some players careers can go so great, per say Michael Jordan, who is one of the greatest basketball players of all time. Basketball affected his life so positively because he was so good, and because of this his life was great. For some people sports can also tear their life apart, say they have a rough year or an injury, this could get to their head and mess up their career. So many athletes are affected by injuries and after they attempt a comeback might never play as good as they did before because they let it get to their heads. Grey’s Anatomy, a medical drama that has been on air for the past 11 years, is my all-time favorite show. Not only is the plot of the series extremely riveting and tear-jerking, but the characters are all able to relate to an aspect of your life even through your most difficult hardships, especially the protagonist, Meredith Grey. Meredith Grey, is known for her well-roundedness not due to her ability as a surgeon (as she is the head of General Surgery), but because of her willingness to aid others when they’re in times of trouble. This is especially true when it comes to her best friends; Christina Yang, Isabella Stevens, Alex Karev, and George O’Malley; who struggle through deaths, countless failed relationships, and illnesses throughout…

The main purpose of J.D. Salinger’s novel, The Catcher in the Rye, is to epitomize the importance of adolescence and illustrate the benefits of a social lifestyle. Salinger achieves this meaning in multiple ways. Primarily, he uses Holden, Catcher’s protagonist, as an example of a teenager who has failed to develop during the quintessential period of youth. Additionally, by characterizing him in this manner, Salinger utilizes Holden’s desire to act both older and younger than his age to convey the dangers that come with poor decision making, as well as their consequences. Lastly, he uses the characters of Mr. Spencer and Mr. Antolini to act as voices of reason to Holden, while also showing Holden’s missed opportunities in life when he does…
