Catcher In The Rye Character Analysis
The main purpose of J.D. Salinger’s novel, The Catcher in the Rye, is to epitomize the importance of adolescence and illustrate the benefits of a social lifestyle. Salinger achieves this meaning in multiple ways. Primarily, he uses Holden, Catcher’s protagonist, as an example of a teenager who has failed to develop during the quintessential period of youth. Additionally, by characterizing him in this manner, Salinger utilizes Holden’s desire to act both older and younger than his age to convey the dangers that come with poor decision making, as well as their consequences. Lastly, he uses the characters of Mr. Spencer and Mr. Antolini to act as voices of reason to Holden, while also showing Holden’s missed opportunities in life when he does …show more content…
He also details that the events occurring last winter were what inspired him to reach out for help. By doing this, Holden is contrasting the vast majority of the actions he makes throughout his madman experience. One of his main grievances with the people around him are that they are, as he frequently claims, “phony.” To Holden, just about everybody can be called a phony, particularly those his age and above. Of the many people he has opportunities to form relationships with, Holden only appears to care about two people: his deceased brother Allie and his younger sister Phoebe, both of whom are prepubescent children. These relationships exist to emphasize Holden’s lack of ability to let go of the past and develop as a person over the course of the book. He has an unhealthy admiration of their childlike innocence, which prompts him to act as immaturely as possible. Subsequently, he tries to show his maturity by making exceptionally poor choices such as getting drunk and hiring a prostitute. Whenever his actions have consequences, he blames the “phony” world around him instead of himself, which motivates him to alienate himself from others.     ‘The Catcher in the Rye’ was written by American author, J.D. Salinger in 1951. The book was an instant success on publication, and still today, over sixty years later, the novel still sells around 250,000 copies each year. The author, J.D.Salinger, was born in New York and was a recluse from the army. After the success of the novel, J.D. Salinger cut himself off from society, and idea expressed many times by the main character, Holden Caulfield, in the novel. The book is set in 1950s America which for many was a time of prosperity and optimism because of the newly ended war. However, there were many cracks in the 1950s beginning to show. There was a huge baby boom, and rising consumerism along with the pressure to conform. This was mainly due to the fading confidence in religion, especially Christianity.
