In the book "The Outsiders" by S.E. Hinton, one of the character's Jonny killed a soca. He ends up running away in the end. That was his first mistake. You don't run away/ flee the town if you know you didn't do anything wrong. Self-defense means that there was nothing he could have done to prevent killing Bob (the soca). (Voluntary) Manslaughter, however, refers to intentionally killing the victim without planning it. In the book, Jonny states if a soca were to ever jump him again, then he would be ready to kill them. Even with that evidence, he still hasn't planned the way, when, or how he would kill someone. He also says "yeah. His voice was quivering slightly. I had to. They were drowning you ponyboy. They might have killed you." He…

Southern Gothic Literature is often distinguished from other genres of literature through author’s fixation on the grotesque, as well as their development of damaged, or even delusional characters. Among demonstrating these recurrent themes in “Good Country People”, Flannery O'connor focuses on the stark contrast between each character’s self proclaimed identities versus their true nature. From a judgmental character like Mrs. Hopewell uttering “Everybody is Different” (O’connor 3), to Manley Pointer pulling pornographic playing cards from his Bible, O’connor has packed her story from start to finish with irony, making the characters more memorable and the climax more shocking. But why go the lengths that O’connor, along with most other Southern Gothic Authors, has to create such intensively ironic situations? Because as unappealing as it sounds, hypocrisy is one of the most relatable human traits. When readers enter Hulga’s house, chock-full of social expectations and “self-satisfied Christian-sounding cliches” (Nielson), they immediately feel her contempt for society and begin to understand her defiant behavior. Reversely, when Mrs. Hopewell lies to Manley about there being a Bible on her nightstand,…

For me, the show still feels a bit like a platform for ABC to showcase their stars. Here is hoping that it will continue to improve and…

In episode twelve, Kimmy finally sets out to make sure her captor goes to prison for his crimes. She goes to trial and confronts the man who kept her locked in a bunker for fifteen years, Reverend Richard Wayne Gary Wayne. The episodes about the trial seem to be attempting to criticize the way our justice system believes (or rather does not believe) women. When we watch the Reverend manipulate everyone in the courtroom, including the prosecutors, it seems insane how easily he did it — surely that could never work in real life — yet, that is the reality that we face. The final episodes, which feature Tina Fey as an incompetent prosecutor, are essentially satirizing the justice system’s imbalance and ineptitude at securing rape convictions.…
