Case Study: Learning To Live Healthy At Hillyard Company
For this Unit’s assignment, I have chosen to elaborate on the “Learning to Live Healthy at Hillyard Companies, case study. Hillyard is a company that has been around since 1907 and has recently been influenced by an HR representative/ wellness coordinator, named Carrie Adams to promote health and wellness through a National Healthy Worksite Program, supported by CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Preventions). As a whole, this program aids companies to encourage and promote a healthier lifestyle for all employees working for a company that participates in one of their programs through physical activity and nutrition education. Obesity today is a continuous struggle with society in general and I believe should not be a sensitive topic to discuss with employees in the workplace and community. Obesity is a serious illness that leads to cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes 1 and 2, bone health disorders and so much more. In addition, obesity can be fatal and lead to death if ignored. Furthermore, the Hillyard company recently completed an assessment/survey in the year of 2013 and unfortunately, the numbers of employees with health conditions; such as, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and obesity have all increased due to a lack of physical activity and poor nutrition habits in and out of the workplace. Some changes that Hillyard has made to improve their scorecard ratings based on their follow up assessments and employee surveys and the quality of life in the workplace is by contracting with local vendors, schools, health and wellness facilities, dieticians to promote nutrition education and reaching out to the community for out of the workplace activities. For instance, Hillyard is an active member of health and wellness events in the St. Joseph community, and the company encourages its employees and their families to participate in these events, including a 12-week “Pound Plunge” challenge” (Cdc.gov, …show more content…
For example, “Mosaic Life Care also ran the 8-week weight management class at Hillyard and encouraged employees to sign up for its biweekly health coaching sessions”(Cdc.gov, 2018). Last but not lease, “Hillyard also promotes staff involvement in St. Joe Fit, an annual program sponsored by several community partners, including the City of Joseph Parks, Recreation and Civic Facilities Department and the state and local health departments. The program includes weekly walking and cycling groups, healthy eating and exercise classes, and participants log their activities and miles to win prizes. Hillyard also sponsors local charity walks, like the St. Joseph’s Color Vibe 5k run, and pays registration fees for employees to participate”(Cdc.gov, 2018). Unfortunately, the Hillyard Company does not emphasize on childhood obesity, because it’s focused more on adults and older adults in the community. However, I believe childhood obesity can be addressed by reaching out to local schools and educating young children and young adolescents about child obesity and the important of eating healthier. In addition, I also believe that putting together local fun runs/walks for this age bracket is a good idea and way to promote physical and social activity. It may influence local schools to make changes to their school

    Health complications are a concern in this population related to obesity. It is not clear why this community has a high rate of obesity as this community has a large population of educated blue-collar worker, which does not fit the typical population of obesity. Obesity in the country is on a rise, and this may be related to the lack of education on healthy eating habits and influences in the media with ads and commercials from food vendors. Education is important to this population and assisting them with alternative options. A nursing intervention would be to implement a group meeting within the community for obesity education. During these meetings discussions on different weight loss methods, complications associated with obesity, diet suggestions, and increase physical activity options would be helpful.     Obesity is a condition of having excess body weight. Today in the USA, 97 million adults are overweight, meaning that 1 out of 3 people we come across in our everyday lives may be obese. However, it is also important to understand that being overweight does not mean one is obese. Many people throw around the word ‘obese’ and are ignorant to the difference of being obese or just simply being overweight. Obesity is having too much body weight, as where people may be overweight due to high levels of muscles or water in their body. In recent times, obesity among Americans has almost doubled, causing the USA to have the highest obesity rate. There are many variables that have contributed to this rapid growth such as fast food restaurants becoming increasingly more available and less expensive, automobiles becoming the number one form of transportation rather than walking or riding a bike, and other factors that promote inactivity such as the use of cell phones, email, etc. We ignore this problem and often look beyond these factors because we consider them “standard” in our lives. Although, before obesity rates spiked, fast food was not as unhealthy or cheap, driving an automobile was only possible for a select few, and technology did not exist like it does now. In order to eliminate such high obesity rates in America I believe we must raise awareness on the damages obesity can have on our well-being. In order to so, there should be a higher emphasis put on healthy living rather than promoting fast food and other habits that are harmful to our health. There are many more solutions to this problem such as raising the price of fast food or making it healthier, but many companies are not willing to make these changes.     The epidemic of obesity seems to have happened over night. Over a period of a few decades individuals in the United States witnessed massive weight gains across the entire nation. Obesity stems from individuals failing to implement personal controls by abstaining from unhealthy foods and ingredients, psychological problems relating to food intake and dependence, as well as failures to remain active and exercise. Current obesity rates around the country average at 30 percent, and have the potential to rise to 50 if serious interventions do not take place. Individual health issues are not the only thing at stake with this epidemic. Obese individuals have more health problems over their lifespan than individuals who maintain recommended weights, and therefore require more healthcare spending and resources. These demands on the healthcare system cause higher premiums for everyone in an insurance group whether private or government sponsored. Valuable healthcare resources are also used up in the process resulting in a diminished quality of care due to the inability to meet the demand. This paper will show attempted successful and unsuccessful public health interventions at the local and federal level to combat obesity with reliable resources such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and research from the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). Other resources examined come from local and federal programs directly from their sponsored sites. The valuable research in this paper shows empirical evidence that obesity may be significantly diminished by community involvement, greater recognition and awareness, and higher amounts of funding towards public health related programs.…
