INTRODUCTION:
Everyone wants to eat freshly prepared homemade food for their lunch after working hard in our morning shift. But what if the home is too far to go and have lunch. There seems to be a solution for this, that is, to bring your tiffin box with you in the morning but what about the freshly preparedness. So in order to solve this problem there is a service available in the economic capital of India, Mumbai. The service is known as Dabbawalas of Mumbai.
A person who collects freshly cooked food in lunch boxes from the residences of mostly-suburban office workers, delivering it to their respective workplaces and returning the empty boxes back to the customer's residence by using various modes of transport is known as Dabbawala. Though the work sounds simple, it is actually a highly specialised trade that is over a century old and has become integral to Mumbai’s culture.
The dabbawala originated when India was under British rule: many Indian people who worked in British companies disliked the British food served by the companies, so a service was set up to bring lunch to them in their workplace straight from their home. Nowadays, although Indian businesspersons are the main customers for the dabbawalas, increasingly affluent families employ them instead for lunch delivery to their school-aged children. The service provided usually consists of delivery of home-made food, or sometimes food ordered from a restaurant, but sometimes it can include cooking.
THE SUPPLY CHAIN:
The services are uninterrupted even on the days of extreme weather, such as Mumbai’s characteristic monsoons. The local dabbawalas at the receiving and the sending ends are known to the customers personally, so that there is no question of lack of trust. Also, they are well accustomed to the local areas they cater to, which allows them to access any destination with ease.
