Carpe Diem Analysis
Carpe Diem is a latin word that means ““seize the day”, used for saying that people should enjoy the present rather than worrying about the future.”(Carpe Diem- Cambridge Dictionary). According to Phrase Finder carpe translates to pluck, so pluck the day. Carpe Diem was first used in Odes Book 1. Odes Book 1 it says, “As we speak cruel time is fleeing. Seize the day, believing as little as possible in the morrow” (Horace, Odes (c.23 BC and 13 BC), Book 1, ode xi, line 8).Over the years that saying has turned into YOLO (you only live once), Stop and smell the roses, and live for today. “YOLO” or you only live once was most popular when Drake, a rapper, released his song in 2011. ““Stop and smell the roses” was a song that was donated to Start …show more content…
We will take a look at two poets; “To His Coy Mistress” by Andrew Marvell and “To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time” by Robert Herrick. “To His Coy Mistress” is to his shy girlfriend. He wants her to “Seize the day” by having a good time with him. Andrew wrote, “I always hear/ Time's winged chariot hurrying near;/ And yonder all before us lie/ Deserts of vast eternity. (lines 21-24). When talking about theses lines Andrew Marvell is talking about how he hears the time of time ending and they will die here shortly. They will be buried in the sand forever. He continues to talk about if him and his girlfriend do not they will be worm food. Yet, he says it this way. “Then worms shall try/ That long preserved virginity,/ And your quaint honor turn to dust,/ And into ashes all my lust” (Marvell lines 27-30). Lust in this since means love so all his love will die in the dust/sand that they are buried in. Now, in the other poem “To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time” by Robert Herrick he tells the “coy” (Herrick line 13) girl to wait till your married. Yet, do it soon because you might lose your “prime” (Herrick line 15) or youth and if you lose your “prime” (line 15). “You may forever tarry” (line 16) or you might get behind. These are from two different points that say just do it and then the second one that is from a preacher. Yet, the preacher uses time with “Sun” (Herrick line 5), meanwhile the first one …show more content…
He met her at a play, but little does she know she has a boyfriend. Knows goes to this party she invites him to and she is passed out on the couch and he gives her a forehead kiss and one of the guys notice playing a game and they have a big fight. The boys by this time in the movie are ran through the woods and started making another dead poet society club.
Todd gets a desk set again for his birthday and one of his friends threw it off the side of the building and said, “Well at least it flew for awhile.” The movie goes on and Neal has had enough and has shot himself because of this father. He did not want to go to military school and his father said it was his fault.
The movie gave a look at the poems just a little twist, but in a different ways. The poems talk about love and the sun. While the movie is about love, freedom, and church bells. So, let’s take a risk and do something

The poem 'As I Walked Out One Evening' consists of three separate speakers: the lovers, the clocks and the narrator. Each speaker represents a different measure and attitude towards time. The lover’s song paints time to be conquerable and ignorable – no more than a passing annoyance that they are outside of. The soliloquy of the clocks demonstrates time as a product of society, there to keep its subjects in line, and ultimately a ruling force. Finally, the narrator speaks of love as being outside of both of these things. Time is a constant flow than brings change and opportunity, and any claim to deny or control it is an illusion.…

The author uses Figurative Language, more specifically, Hyperbole and Metaphors, throughout the poem to reveal the theme. For example, in line four, the poet states “and there the sun burns crimson bright.” This supports the theme because it exaggerates how bright and beautiful the world would be if all were creative and tolerant. Additionally, the use of a positive language to…

Poets often use their work to express their thoughts, this is what the writers of ‘hour’ and ‘to his coy mistress’ have done to express their thoughts on time and love. In hour the poem is about time and how it is short lived when you are in love, whereas 'To His Coy Mistress' is a poem where the man is trying to convince the woman to sleep with him and exploring the idea of living and enjoying your life whilst you’re young.…

Time’s versatile affect on life is seen through the use of successive contrasts such as “quench and ripen” and “kiss and kill”. The anticipation of the future is personified in the line “Tomorrow begs him, breathless for his lack” referring to those who cannot wait for another day, presumably in excitement. Yet the oxymoron “beauty dead” reminds us of the decomposing effects of time and that life must ultimately end no matter how much we wish it would stop to prevent beauty and youth from fading.…

Both of the poems use different types of poetic techniques to depict how time can effect the relationship of two lovers. In 'Hour' Duffy uses a metaphor at the start of the poem to allude how love has less power than time. When Duffy announces 'Love's time's beggar, but even a single hour,/bright as a dropped coin, makes love rich.' we see a twist of notion, like every second is like an hour creating a paradox. Duffy also uses refereces to two fairytales, Rumpelstiltskin and King Midas. When Duffy declares 'the Midas light/turning your limbs to gold.' Duffy portrays a slightly sinister tone almost giving the reader a message to becareful what you wish for just like in the fairytale of King Midas. When Duffy announces at the end of the poem 'love spins gold, gold, gold from straw' Duffy refers to the story of Rumpelstlitskin and could be trying to warn her partner of the commitments they may make or perhaps could be telling her readers to have a reality check once in a while because sometimes you may feel like your relationship and the love you share will be forever and extrodinary but time will always shorten or take it away. On the other hand 'To His Coy Mistress' opens with and idea of if the two lovers had enough time they would do great things. When Marvell announces 'Had we but world enough, and time/This coyness, Lady, were no crime,' he gives the reader an idea of spending all the time in the world with his lover, if they had all the time in the world. When Marvell uses the adjective…

Carpe Diem’s strong formal diction is appropriate as the author directs a lesson not only to the reader but also to the friend that which he is speaking to. Therefore, a strict tone along with an imperative and informative attitude is expressed by the author. “Be wise! Drink free, and in so short a space / Do not protracted hopes of life embrace” (Horace). Instructional orders are given to the friend by the author for they are necessities of a proper-lived life. In addition, the language used corresponds with the author’s standpoint. Horace also uses other devices such as personification to make a point while supporting the tone. “Whilst we are talking, envious time doth slide” (Horace). Horace expresses the advancement of time as sliding and as envious therefore personifying it and giving it human-like characteristics. In addition, Horace continues to instruct his outlook on life to his friend maintaining the tone of the poem.…

This movie and poem are connected by a history of power and violence in which we can see bloody scenes and deaths. There also two histories that lack of love, and neither of them provides any link of friendship, but rather each of them cares about their own, every character of the movie and poem takes care of themselves because they have to fight to defend themselves from the terrible things that happen. Another important aspect of the two stories are they both belong to the old English period with differences with the pronunciation of Modern English and the English spoken at the time of the…

As we all know in reality, the universe is nonhuman and does not possess the ability to speak. For that reason, this poem utilizes personification to convey a Man vs Nature conflict, which adds to the overall meaning of the poem. Stephen Crane, a naturalist, impressionist, and a firm believer in environmental determinism, also uses cosmic irony to spice up the message is trying to portray. Cosmic irony is the idea that fate and the universe are big forces and control human actions and emotions. The utilization of this literary element helps to show that the main character feels forgotten, unloved, and uncared about. This duo of literary elements adds to the harsh and ultimate message that Stephen Crane is attempting to show all of us: Society, Life, People, the World, and the Universe does not owe us…

Woody Allen once said, “I don't want to achieve immortality through my work. I want to achieve it through not dying.” Allen refers not to living longer in age, but his memory living on and never being forgotten. John Donne, in Death Be Not Proud (Holy Sonnet 10), expresses the same logic, saying Death is not something to be afraid of and how the speaker has dominated it. Donne uses anthropomorphism, figurative language, and tone to show readers death is vulnerable and it is easily taken over with willpower.…

Love is presented in ‘In Paris With You’ through repetition as ‘Paris’ and the mantra ‘In Paris with you’ is repeated more than 10 times; this shows that the speaker wishes to focus solely on the present and the time that he is sharing with his lover in that moment. Similarly, in ‘to his coy mistress’ the present is also a point of convergence as he is urging his mistress to make the most of life and live in the moment (by sleeping with him) because life is short. The poet uses time references to convey how life is going so fast when he says that if they had the time he would ‘love you ten years before the flood’ and ‘hundred years should go to praise thine eyes’ – he uses hyperbolic flattery to persuade his mistress to be with him intimately.…
