Cepler Youth’s Perspective The poem “Where the Sidewalk Ends” by Shel Silverstein contains a deeper meaning than what shows on the surface. This poem tells a story about a better place that only the children know; a place different from all the hate and darkness shown in modern life. Shel Silverstein is mostly known for his touching children’s book, The Giving Tree, and poetry. In the poem “Where the Sidewalk Ends,” the author emphasizes the idea of how we must follow the children to create an exceeding world. Silverstein uses Hyperbole and Imagery, in this poem to convey a youth’s perspective. He continues to mention all the various benefits followed by having the mindset of a child. The author uses Figurative Language, more specifically, Hyperbole and Metaphors, throughout the poem to reveal the theme. For example, in line four, the poet states “and there the sun burns crimson bright.” This supports the theme because it exaggerates how bright and beautiful the world would be if all were creative and tolerant. For example, in line three, the poet states, “and there the grass grows soft and white.” This supports the theme because it shows how a child’s mind is bright and calming like the atmosphere of our ideal world. On the other hand, the poet then comments how power-seeking adults affects our present world, and states in line seven “where the smoke blows black.” This line further develops the theme because it states the negative influence that more advanced and greedy minds have on our present world.     Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein is a poem that describes a place that is only enjoyable to children or youth because they are able to use their innocent imagination to fantasize the place beyond "where the sidewalk ends" (L.1) where as an adult may have grown up and lost their imagination in the city "where asphalt flowers grow" (L.9) A theme depicted in this poem is reality because it takes us deep into the land of childhood fantasies, just because we use our imagination to travel to where the sidewalk ends, does not make it any less real. Silverstein uses rhythm and repeats some lines to make sure the reader can fully take in what he is writing. He rhymes line three, four and five when describing the imaginary place to make it the place even more appealing for the reader.     This stanza celebrates life, or the way it should be for kids. These verses jump out at the reader and suddenly you can identify with a carefree child, who can freely play in the fields and enjoy nature, without being confined to a job or any labor intensive activity. There is joy and optimism in this stanza, even if it is a dream. The Chimney Sweeper from the Songs of Innocence also includes lines like “They rise upon clouds, and sport in the wind” which is lighthearted and airy and again references nature. Then the tone shifts dramatically in the last stanza, when the chimney sweepers stop daydreaming and continue cleaning the chimneys. In the last stanza, Blake shows still inner optimism in the young sweeps, even as they buckle back down to do work that sends shivers down their spine. In some way, the ending sends out the message that even though these children are practically being abused and forced into this line of work, that they can always find a way to cope, by having a positive mindset that they will someday move past this horrible time can keep them going.…

    After reading and analyzing the poem “Women on a beach” written by Ann Michael’s, I have noticed many occurrences of imagery and the use of literal and figurative language manipulated into the poem. The first use of imagery is when Ann uses “light chooses white sails, the bellies of gulls.” Ann is describing the scene of the poem in a unique way so that it’s not very dull and boring and makes it more amusing for the reader. Since it’s the first line of the poem, you want to engage the reader to continue reading by making it interesting. Another case of imagery that appears in the poem is when Ann says, “the beach glows grainy under the sun’s copper pressure.” This is another unique way that Ann uses to describe the scene because she points out that the heat from the sun is shinning down onto the sand and its very hot out making it glow. She’s explaining the temperature of the setting in contrasting way making it more interactive for the reader. An additional use of imagery that Ann uses in her poem is when she says, “the wind finger against your cheek like a tendril of hair.” This is describing the slight breeze that is taking place in the scene using personification. She’s attributing human characteristic to something nonhuman, which in this case is the wind. In conclusion, Ann Michaels used imagery throughout her poem to transform the everyday into the unique.…
