Carlos Ejarque Mart Nez The Other Side Of Vilnius
CARLOS EJARQUE MARTINEZ – THE OTHER SIDE OF VILNIUS

First of all, just make clear I think Vilnius is a nice town. It has everything I like or need. But I think it is developing as a city, in the middle of the road. Because anyone can see how nice some zones or areas are, how much money has been invested on them and how other areas less touristic have been discarded. Or how even in the same good zones there are some details still to work out.
I am not an expert, but I guess they are in the path to become a better city, a more global one and more reclaim for the people abroad. I know is a decades process, that’s is why there are so many structural problems but since I am new in town it’s now when I am able to judge it, I come from a bigger town(Spain) and despite it is far from being perfect you can see the differences between both.
Finally I have chosen to focus only in the bad zones because everyone has heard about the nice ones, living here its unavoidable to hear about its churches, parks, views…. So I wanted to go the other way, because at the end of the day these zones are as much as viewed than the other ones. So, I wanted to have the chance to inspect the hidden places, the things no one wants to see, to check the other side, also living in the main center of the city sometimes you just see the important, the beauty of it and forget about the rest, that is what I wanted to answer. And from that, be totally objective and global about my view in the city.
In my map there are only a few examples about what I do not like, scares me or just find ugly about Vilnius, like the alleys, the public toilets, some areas crossing the river. Probably it is just me and my paranoia but there are quite some places which I avoid or just not going in the night, I don’t trust certain zones, I don’t feel safe in those.
So, to sum up. From my foreigner point of view, I like the city, in its total self I really like it. I can do all I like and need, but it is just focused in some points. It should be better at every level to become a powerful town.

Just like it is easy to judge others for what wrong doings they’ve done, it’s easy for us to look at our cities and notice the flaws they have. Transportation and other infrastructures are often first to take the blame for the failure of our cities here in the U.S. Gently winding freeways that cut through impoverished neighborhoods, and bus stops with only a stick with a sign that says “Bus Stop” on it are good examples of ways that our current infrastructure can take the blame. What happens when we look at our cities from another perspective; the positive one. What have we done as residents and politicians to better our cities and help them flourish instead of decay?…

From city to city, cultures, environments, and beliefs vary immensely. A city means more than simply “a large town.” For example, my own home of Dallastown, Pennsylvania differs drastically from the much larger city of Philadelphia. Where I grew up, the white population is the overwhelming majority; Philadelphia obviously differs in this category. Cities provide a haven of interesting people from conflicting ideologies, color, and financial statuses. My home’s landscape is regularly hilly and forested, whereas Philadelphia is full of skyscrapers, streets, and city-lights. Every town and city is unique in their own sense; landmarks, culture, music, and even transportation define what that place might stand for, or signify. I’ve visited numerous…

People always say that living in a large city is a great quality, they like it because it let them get a lot of benefits; in my opinion, every place has its drawbacks; there is no perfect place that we can say: “It is formidable”. In the other hand, they are people who hate living in a large city, and they prefer the small one. As far as I live in Raleigh, I do not like it due to three reasons: change of weather, few means of transportation, and quiet life.…

When I first visited this part of the city, it was mostly an open space that had lots of fields, trees and a very minimum number of dwellers. There were hardly any high rising building and mostly farmers and fishers lived there. The fields, lakes and people’s way of living used to give an impression of an urban life. But this is no longer applicable for this part of the city. I went to that part of the city a few days back after a long time and was very surprised to…

The contemporary city is a complex and ever developing organism that maintains a level of influence in the world that has never been seen before. Major cities such as New York, London and Tokyo are global command centers for the world’s economy and have direct and indirect influences on just about everyone engaged in the world society. However despite all the leaps and bounds that cities have made as far as growth and power, there are more micro-level social and economic issues that have been exacerbated by this progression. The essence of the city has and always will be the people that inhabit it; how they live, work and interact should be the primary focus of any urban environment. Gentrification, social and economic stratification and even unjust organization of space are some of the most pressing problems that many cities are facing. Interestingly enough, depending on whom you ask, you could get an extremely positive or negative view on the direction that the contemporary city is headed.…

We were new to this city so we knew nothing except for the name of it. Although the city was a little bit smaller than St. Louis, but it was breathtaking. To my surprise the air was fresh, it was like the fresh air in a meadow. The people overall were pretty nice with some even offering to take us to the mechanic when we asked. I really liked this city, but one thing was pretty infuriating, which was that the streets were like a labyrinth. Due to the streets being so complicated, we were out walking around for an hour before we found the mechanic. Once we got to him, he simply took us in his tow truck, towed our car, fixed the car, charged us and we went home.…
