Course Description:
Review of theories of decision-making career development, occupational choice, and job satisfaction. Additional topics include vocational measurement and assessment, evaluation and use of occupational information, and strategies of life-span planning.

Course Objectives:
Develop a conceptual framework of how careers begin and evolve
Develop an understanding of the factors affecting your career development and planning
Research, evaluate, and use occupational information from a variety of resources
Develop communication skills in order to facilitate self-reflection and enhance the ability to market yourself in a career
This course meets the Information Literacy and the Oral Discourse requirement for the University at Albany.

    During the five week course of Business Communication and Critical Thinking class, there were three activities on My Career Plan page on University of Phoenix website that were required to be completed. The three activities were Career interests Profiler, Work Culture Preferences and Reasoning Aptitude. These activities that were taken and completed during this course to help me gain knowledge on the type of work that will be a best fit for me. The activities also helped to form around how this course applies to the career plan. For instance, the activity on the Career Interests Profiler can give ideas as to the possible career paths for me. I needed to complete a series of questions in order for the profiler to create the careers according to the answers given. Once I completed answering the questions, the profiler had identified three specific characteristics for me. They were: artistic, conventional and enterprising. Below these there were possible career paths that agree with the three characteristics. Followed by the top picks were arts, designs, entertainment, media and managing. Critical thinking is an important aspect when looking at the arts and managing careers. Change is key and requires a large amount of focus and creative perspectives. The Career Plan Building Activities in addition to this course was a strong reinforcement that indeed choose the right career. With the Career Plan Building Activities I gained a better knowledge of my capabilities. The result gave me a better insight, knowledge of the areas that I stand out professionally, and the areas in which I need improvement. This course was also a benefit to my professional career, and understanding the types of communication is important. It is important to tell the difference between audiences to create the correct style to deliver a message successfully. I feel that the assessments and the course were important for my career plan.
