Career Goals: Sonya May
As I begin the next chapter of this portion of my educational journey, I face the challenge of deciding what my ultimate education goal will be. There are numerous factors that must be considered when making this decision. One of those factors is determining if Walden University will provide the type of educational setting that is needed to reach my goal. While an online academic setting is the correct choice, I must determine with the outcomes and features of my future courses will line up with what I hope to accomplish. Unfortunately, I do not think that Walden University is a good fit for me.
Personal Goals
When determining a career goal, one must also consider the effect on personal goals. My most important personal goal is to provide a positive home environment for my family. Stress associated with being enrolled in school can affect this goal. I need a school that can provide the needed feedback in a timely manner. This would help to reduce this level of stress. Another personal goal that I have is providing economically for my family. I believe that furthering my education will assist with this goal. According to an article from 2011 by Olivia Winslow, “The income of American workers is far more affected by education level than other factors, including gender and race, according to a new Census Bureau study. The study is based on estimated lifetime earnings of people aged 25 to 64 using demographic data from the bureau 's 2006-2008 American Community Survey. Data collected include education level, age, income and race.” (www.newsday.com). I believe the outcomes of this university would align with this goal.
Career Goals
My main career goal is to ultimately obtain my Master’s degree. While considering this university, I agree that the outcomes that are set forth in my Learning Path would align with this goal. I am not so sure when considering the features of this setting.

The current learner has reflected on Walden’s Mission, Values, and Outcomes, and one realizes that the Walden’s outcome and beliefs appear to have implications for one’s Portfolio of Visions. For instance, though the current learner truly appreciates four particular beliefs of Walden, namely: Walden University believes that an academic program (e.g., Walden MS Leadership program) should be learner-centric, and incorporates a particular learner's prior knowledge and allows the person to one’s academic work on their needs and interests; Walden University believes that positive social change enhances the dignity of the people, the equality and freedom of people, and the goodness of creation that supports all life; Walden University believes that a learner effects positive social change when one behaves as a…

After Graduate School, I hope to have my PhD in psychology or my doctorate in psychiatry. I would like to start out working in jails, talking to criminals and analyzing their brains versus the brain of an average adult to study how the brain reacts with criminal activity and why they do and feel what they do. I have heard that a person can not do that type of work for very long because it is emotionally tasking so after that, I would like to open my own counseling practice up. I would do either marriage and family therapy or focus on teenage depression. Eventually, I would like to retire into school psychology or become a psychology teacher. Also, if I ever have enough money, I will buy a house devoted to taking in stray animals…

When it comes to my education my short-term goal is to finish out this school year and maintain my current GPA. I find it easier to motivate myself each day if I have set in stone grade goals in mind. My long-term education goal is to finish my Associate of Applied Business degree in spring 2017 and my Associate of Arts degree in spring of 2018. I have enough classes and credit hours to finish a second associate degree in two part-time semesters. My short term career goal is to continue where I am until I graduate and learn as much as I can from those around me. I find that the people around me at my current jobs are very intelligent and it would be wasteful of me to not learn what I can from them before I move on. My long-term career goal…

My long-range career goals are to produce research on African-American women artist as it related to gender, racism, sexism and equality, produce scholarly literature and conduct scholarly presentations, and teach on a collegial level. In addition, I plan to continue this research to include women artists of the African Diaspora living in Central and South America, Africa and Europe. These women are also excluded from the history books and the classroom. However, I only can presume their experiences of gender, sexism, racism and inequality are similar to Africa-American woman artist living in the United…

There exists this pressure on my generation that we must have our entire lives already planned out to a T. Even as a fifth grader, I remember a prompt on a state test asking “Describe your lifetime goals and how you will achieve them.” This question is asked throughout our lives in different variations but the point remains the same. What are you going to do with your life? Asking me this prompt throughout my years in high school would have given you 4 completely different answers. Just a couple months ago I would have given you a different answer than I would have now and I’m sure a similar story can be said for almost any student. Lifetime goals evolve as we mature and grow throughout life, and my high school career reflects these changes.…

My salient career goal is to become a successful computer engineer, as women are a minority in the engineering field. I chose engineering, because I love problem solving, math and building circuits on my breadboard. My goals for now are to graduate with a high GPA and to gain experience through my college journey. I tend to get better grades when I understand the material better, which is by tutoring others. Also, having work experience can be extremely helpful, as it is a whole new environment. If selected for the HLSAMP program, I would increase diversity by sharing my experiences of coming from a diverse country with others.…
