Carbon Footprint Paper 3
Carbon Footprint Paper I chose to do my carbon footprint through http://coolclimate.berkeley.edu. This website provided me with an action plan on ways to reduce tons of CO2/year. Although with that said, I was surprised with the result which showed that we are doing 23.8% better than the average household in my area within the same income level.
Our travel added up to be 1.9 tons of CO2/year which turned out to be 88.5% better than the average household. Our housing on the other hand came out to be 15 tons of CO2/year, making it 10.5% worse than the average household. Our food totaled up to be 10.7 CO2/year, making it 9.3% worse than the average household. Our shopping/spending totaled to 12.1 tons of CO2/year, making it 35.6% worse than the average household. Information used to obtain these numbers included our electric and gas bills. Other sources included cell phone bill, gas (fuel) receipts, and credit cards statements. This website is very insightful and provides suggestions that one can use to build an action plan. I was provided with at least 38 suggested steps that we as a family can take. There were a few that unfortunately cannot be implemented. One being purchasing green electricity, in the town that we live in, there is only one electric provider for those who reside in city limits. In this area we don’t have a choice but to use this specific electric provider. On the other hand, we have chosen 5 steps to take to begin our journey to saving in CO2/year. A few suggestions we have chosen include, line-dry clothing, printing double sided, turning off lights, maintaining our vehicles more, and turning down the thermostat in the winter. These steps combined can begin to save 1.39 tons in CO2/year. We already have energy efficient appliances and electronics in the household. Other steps that we have decided to implement include finding ways to reduce our shopping. This is a hard area to work on but by reducing or even removing unnecessary services will

The United States leaves a huge carbon footprint through energy use, this can be reduced by: building energy efficient homes, reducing motor vehicle use, and recycling more. Some energy related activities were the lowering energy costs in the home. People sometimes think this to be hard but here are some good steps to follow to make it seem it easier. Reset the water heater thermostat, people do not always realize that most water heaters heat water to a set temperature and then hold it there, meaning that throughout the day and night the water heater cycles on and off, just maintaining that already set temperature. If we were to go the water heater and lower the setting a few degrees it can often save half as much energy and the chances are turning down the temperature won’t even be noticeable to most members of the family. Another way to lower energy costs in the home is with a programmable thermostat for heating the home. Just like the water heater maintains a set temperature even when it is not being used a thermostat does the exact same thing for your entire home. When we are just letting it cool off (or warm up) when there is no one awake can save energy and money as well. By letting the house cool on its own and not turning up the thermostat this can save you money. This change will usually pay for itself in around three years. We also have attic and wall insulation where there is a difference between the indoor and outdoor temperate, the more energy this will take to maintain a temperature of comfort in our homes. By adding insulation between the indoors and the outdoors we are reducing the energy demand. This of course depends on where you live, because the savings from insulating your walls and attic could almost double the savings. This will pay back in 3 ½ years to 12 years…

Global Warming consist of many issues that affect our daily lives. We can all do out part in trying to mitigate global warming There are many simple steps you can take right now to cut global warming pollution. Make conserving energy a part of your daily routine. Each time you choose a compact fluorescent light bulb over an incandescent bulb, for example, you 'll lower your energy bill and keep nearly 700 pounds of carbon dioxide out of the air over the bulb 's lifetime. By opting for a refrigerator with the Energy Star label indicating it uses at least 15 percent less energy than the federal requirement over a less energy-efficient model, you can reduce carbon dioxide pollution by nearly a ton in total. Join NRDC in our campaign against global warming.…

With energy being a scarce resource, people across the world need to look at lifestyle changes to protect the environment for future generations. Anything from driving less to turning off a light in a room can help the cause. Conservation methods take thought, commitment, and changes to everyday lives to make a difference. In order to conserve energy, consumers need to be aware of their daily usage and find ways to cut the usage down. Conservation of energy includes using less gasoline, electricity, and non-renewable resources. It also involves finding and producing alternative energy, recycling and home improvements. Not all methods of energy conservation will negatively impact the daily routines of people. With a little consideration and dedication to reduce energy consumption, everyone can do their part.…

I believe that the onus is on citizens to lessen the effect of climate change, and that they should reduce their carbon footprint in daily life in several ways. On an individual level, people should reduce the use of air-conditioning units, which release copious amounts of carbon dioxide and gives rise to global warming. An alternative is that they should use fans, which are more environmentally friendly. Citizens should be more aware of the use of energy at home.…

We as humans can do our part personally to contribute in energy conservation and helping to sustain the environment through using more energy efficient appliances which can be a bit costly at first but will save energy, the environment, and ourselves money in the long run. We as consumers can purchase compact fluorescent light bulbs that use less energy and last longer than incandescent light bulbs. And the next time you’re looking to purchase a new vehicle that is fuel efficient like a hybrid car which combines gasoline engines and electric motors. I think knowledge is power when it comes to each person doing their part so feel free to engage in more research on…

Each person can help conserve energy by walking, riding a bike or carpooling instead of individually driving to help control the pollution to our environment. We can recycle paper, plastic and glass. By doing this we are helping protect some of the trees that are being cut down to make paper. Plastic can be used to make other things and conserve some of the oil that is used to make them. Glass containers can be reused or recycled to make more glass containers. We also reduce consumption of energy resource by turning of lights, fans or televisions when they are not in use. By doing this we will also save money on our individual energy bills.…

If we don’t do anything about this soon, the planet we call home could turn to chaos. If we fund money and time into helping our environment and various climates by being more energy efficient, we can make a difference. I urge you to spend just a little more time and money into helping slow global warming down by conserving water, planting more trees, recycling and reducing your waste. Also, scale down on your use of fossil fuels and other malignant toxins that are heating our atmosphere. By doing this, we will be able to bring climate change to an…

Individuals can take action by investing on greener energy sources. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has made it easier now more than ever for people to reduce their own carbon footprint by labeling various electrical products ranging from dishwashers to tablets with an Energy Star label. These products meet EPA’s low standards of energy consumption which will in turn reduce the cost of energy bills. As for transportation, carpooling and public transportation that rely on renewable energy are key to reducing your carbon footprint. Less than a decade ago, most vehicles were required to only meet minimal fuel-economy standards (Henson 388), so for those who must commute by car daily, investing in an energy efficient vehicles like electric cars and hybrids is a great way to help cut carbon…

My Carbon Footprint average is closer to sixty-four thousand pounds per year with three people in my household. Many of the major sources the carbon comes from, can be reduced if not deleted at all. Five major sources of our footprint, at my house, from greatest to least is as follows: natural gas, driving three vehicles, each going one hundred and fifty to one hundred and seventy-five miles a week, which makes nine thousand one hundred miles a year, along with air conditioning being a main problem in the summer instead of winter, also our vehicles not being hybrid and using electricity rather than gasoline, in addition, our propane usage when used to cook out (Calculator). If we reduced many of these things, the world would be seven thousand two hundred forty-six pounds lighter. While also saving us a grand total of seven hundred forty-four dollars a year.…

Households’ carbon footprints have fluctuated on a regular basis for many years. Why is this the case? Surely our carbon footprint should be reducing with ever increasing pressures from Governments and NGOs to consider the consequences of our lifestyles on the future of our planet. This is not the result though, “our needs and desires are expressed in the consumer demand for commodities, and it is this demand for goods and services which drives the production processes that consume resources” (Druckman, Jackson, 2009). Druckman and Jackson aim to understand carbon dioxide emissions from economic activity and “explore the variation in carbon footprints across different segments of society.” Druckman and Jackson found that affluence was a big factor in determining carbon emission disparities but it was not the only factor. Using a Local Area Resource Analysis (LARA) model, they realised that dwelling type and household composition also played a part. Using a variety of different methods and data, Druckman and Jackson tried to understand the variations in the UK’s carbon emissions. Examples of the different types of data in the literature were: “Allocation table for high level functional uses”, trends in CO2 and household expenditure in the UK and “CO2 emissions attributable to Supergroups”. In almost all research projects there are assumptions and limitations and this was also the case in this literature. Druckman and Jackson are attempting to understand emissions linked to consumption, something that requires a great amount of data collecting due to embedded consumption. This consumption accounting requires Environmental Input-Output modelling which has not been used in the UK since 1995. Druckman and Jackson therefore have to use alternative methods (in this case, the “1995 Leontief Inverse and Imports Use Matrices”), this means that industry structure is not accurate, which therefore means that the…

Do you still want to drive your car ?Think before you drive and how its harmful to our environment. By taking public transportation you are saving money in your pocket and same time you saving our environment. Third use less electricity .I know people feel lazy taking any power off or turning light off. But did you ever thought its bad. How much its harmful and how much fossil fuel uses .We are human turning our planet to hell. By producing way to much carbon footprint .That main reason why iceberg is melting in Poland…

There are many things we can each do in our own homes to conserve energy. Some things are cheaper and easier to do than others. I advise to start with what you can and then work your way up. Some easy and far from costly things we can do in our homes are turning off devices and appliances when they are not in use, swap out appliances for more energy efficient appliances, change light bulbs to fluorescent ones, and seal spots where air can easily escape such as around doors and windows. Some other methods to conserve energy have pretty steep upfront costs but really pay off in the long run and some of these methods require community participation. One method that is pricey but does not require community participation would be to install solar paneling. This will help cut your electric bill during the day and you would only have to pay for what you use at night.…
