Synthesis of 7, 7- dichloronorcarane in Carbon Addition Reaction

Abstract:
A solution of cyclohexene, aqueous sodium hydroxide, and benzyltriethylammonium was used to synthesize 7,7 – dichloronorcarane by the following reaction: + CHCl3 + OH - H2O + + Cl -
After completion of the experiment, the percent recovery was calculated to be 46.21%

Introduction
The purpose of this experiment was to form 7,7-dichloronorcarane by means of carbene trapping. Cyclohexene, aqueous sodium hydroxide, and benzyltriethylammonium chloride were used to synthesize 7,7 – dichloronorcarane by the following reaction: + CHCl3 + OH- H2O + + Cl-
In order to carry out this reaction in reasonable time, a two phase reaction was used, avoiding the lengthy requirements to carry out the experiment as a single phase reaction, as well as the risk of undesirable products due to the presence of water. The components of the two stage reaction were as follows: An organic phase containing the alkene and CHCl2; and an aqueous phase containing the base OH –. Since the reactants, CHCl2 and OH – would separate into different phases, benzyltriethylammonium chloride was added as a phase-transfer catalyst. Because the benzyltriethylammonium chloride has both hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties, it could cross the phase boundary and facilitated the transport of the hydroxide ion from the aqueous phase to the organic phase. Procedure
To begin, 0.324g of cyclohexene was mixed with 1 ml of 50% aqueous sodium hydroxide, 1ml of chloroform and 0.040g of the phase transfer catalyst benzyltriethylammonium chloride. The reaction was stirred and heated at 40 degrees Celsius for an hour before extracting the 7,7 dichloronorcarane through 2 methyl chloride extraction processes (1ml methylene chloride).     To synthesize 4-methylcyclohexene from 4-methylcyclohexanol the starting material can be dehydrated resulting in the desired compound. For dehydration to be possible the OH group on the 4-methylcyclohexene must first be converted into H2O by means of an acid-base reaction using a strong acid catalyst such as phosphoric acid and sulfuric acid. The H2O will then become the favored leaving group and leave on its own resulting in the formation of a carbocation in excess water. The water will remove the acidic hydrogen on the carbocation producing the desired alkene as well as regenerating the acid catalyst (fig. 2). A time effective way to collect the 4-methylcyclohexene is to heat the reaction to reflux as it is taking place. This allows the product to be separated from the starting materials by means of the boiling point discrepancy between the isolated alkene (101-102C) and the starting alcohol (171-173C). After the distillate is collected any impurities of water and phosphoric acid can be extracted by adding sodium chloride, drying the resulting organic layer with an anhydrous solid, and filtration.     During the reflux period, there have not been any signs of errors; the reflux distillation process occurred smoothly. Once reflux distillation was completed, the mixture was cooled to room temperature, then extracted thrice by a separatory funnel. Before any extractions proceeded though, the mixture already had two distinct layers – a top dark brown layer, and a bottom light yellow layer. This mixture was extracted with 9M sulfuric acid, and the aqueous layer, containing butanol, sulfuric acid, and water, was removed and discarded. The organic layer, consisting of the n-butyl bromide, went through a second extraction with water. This resulted in an organic layer of n-butyl bromide and water and an aqueous layer of water and a little amount of alcohol, which was discarded.     What is chemical change? Chemical change is the alteration of a substance into one or more different substances with different properties (also called chemical reaction).
