Capricious traffic police
Painful Gridlock
A few days ago, while I was returning to Dhaka from Comilla, one of my friends called me in my mobile and wanted to know where I was. Right on that time I was in Kaanchpur Bridge. I told him that I was in Comilla. The thing is that was not untrue in the sense that it took 4 hours to reach Jatrabari, a time more than enough to reach Dhaka from Comilla. I knew this would happen and the confidence stemmed from the constant and horrible national Jatrabari gridlock. Gulistan-Jatrabari 10 kilometre flyover construction has not been completed yet which was supposed to end in December, 2012. This giant construction narrowed the passage for vehicles. Besides, the traffic police are also reckless in their duties and are completely failing to handle this gridlock. They make it even worse by letting the vehicles move disorderly. If it takes 3-4 hours to reach Saidabad from Kaanchpur, what the hell city are we living in? People who face this unbearable congestion in 8-9 pm have to wait until it is 1 am to reach Saidabad. The pick pockets and hijackers do roam right in that time exposing the passengers to vulnerable criminal attack. Moreover, it is hard to find a public transport then. How horrible this scenario is!
The trucks with heavy consignments from Chittagong and the busses from south-eastern districts with passengers blend here in this narrow passage. Any bypass road hasn’t been there to ease the gridlock which is supposed to be when a flyover like this happens in a city area. The timeline provided by LGRD ministry to have the flyover finished has exceeded and we keep suffering. How long will it continue?

In the early 1990’s there was an incident that happened in Southern California that rocked the city of Los Angeles. The incident involved California Highway Patrol and the Los Angeles Police Department, and a civilian named Rodney King. “According to official reports, the car’s two passengers quickly and lay on the ground as instructed. But, when the driver King, finally emerged from the car, his bizarre behavior and spotty compliance with police orders led officers to believe he was drunk, or high on PCP.” (Falkenrath and Rosegrant, 2016) This led to the use of a stun gun, and then the use of batons striking King more than two dozen times. These events would have probably been swept under the rug with the exception that another citizen was…

For many years police officers have enjoyed the power of authority over the general public with the motto “to protect and serve”. If this is the case, then let this become the yardstick that will measure the conduct that police most earnestly proclaim. Police officers are held as the safeguard of the community. They are designed to protect the people from the criminal elements and serve as role models for those who need to understand law and order. But when this breach occurs, when the police believe that they can do whatever they decide without a form of accountability, police brutality is birthed. The case of Solomon v. Auburn Hills Police Department is a prime example of unnecessary police involvement. This case is a result of information, misinformation, direction, and misdirection as to the physical presence of an adult to accompany children to a particular movie in that theatre. To have two beefy police officers arrive to resolve a dispute over a ticket purchase to me appears to have been a waste of…

Police officer asking for sexual favors while on duty is a misuse of power and displays corruption and a bad representation of ethics for the police department. English heritage played in an integral part in modern American policing. Corruption has been a problem in most police departments everywhere. The problem has been corrected within most departments but is still a major problem. Brutality and misconduct have also been a obstruction to police as well. There is hope as police departments have come up with ways of preventing the problem…

ENGL 1301 Research Paper The California Highway Patrol Post 9/11, I was given the opportunity to work in partnership with the California Highway Patrol (CHP) department. I always had the utmost respect for personnel in uniform and being able to work side by side with police officers has made me respect them even more. To me, the CHP is one of the most elite forces that existsthroughout California and our nation. Their history and ability to provide so much security and protection for the citizens of Californiamakes them some of the best men and women in uniform. The CHP has multiple programs and Task Forces designed to provide the highest level of safety, service, and security to the people of California. The accomplishments that women have achieved, in more than 30 years, in the department is simply amazing. The CHP department has also had the misfortune of encountering road bumps within the members of the force. There have been many cases where officers have decided to break the same laws that they swore to enforce. Before relocating to Texas, I wanted to become a member of the CHP. However, that is currently not possible, so I can just research their rich history and background and to be a part of them that way. The mission and organizational goals of the California Highway Patrol are to provide the highest level possible of safety, service, and security to the people of California. Safety, service, and security is the CHP motto. “This is accomplished through five departmental goals. Maximize Service to the Public and Assistance to Allied Agencies To maximize service to the public in need of aid or information, and to assist other public agencies when appropriate. Manage Traffic and Emergency Incidents - To promote the safe and efficient movement of people and goods throughout California, and to minimize exposure of the public to unsafe conditions resulting from emergency incidents and highway impediments. There is so…

A police officers role in society is to effectively enforce laws, arrest offenders when a crime has been committed, prevent crime to their best ability, preserve the peace whenever possible, and provide services to community citizens in their time of need. Over the past 25-30 years, police departments have proactively been enforcing the Community Policing Theory, developed by Professor Herman Goldstein, on their staff and officers. Community policing promotes relationships between officers and society. In order to prevent crime, officers and communities need to work together to address the problems that encourage or cause criminal activity. In order for this theory to work properly, police officers…

Police corruption has always been a problem in American society and it happens everywhere. According to the book Criminal Justice A Brief Introduction, “Police Corruption is the abuse of police authority for personal or organizational gain.” An example of police corruption can be when, a police officer pulls you over and he comes up to you and asks you for money instead of actually giving you the ticket of whatever he pulled you over for. Police will take bribes, drugs, and anything else that is illegal. Police corruption is most likely to happen where there is least scrutiny amongst the officers. Since they are not going to be searched/examined, then they will go and doing what they want and bring in anything they want since their job won’t be put on the line for their actions.…

The problem is the police can’t control their power they tend to abuse it. They over use it when they have no need to. This dates back all the way past the 1960’s. My first knowledge of it my self was the Rodney King beating when the police officers beat Him viciously even when unarmed. These officers caused a man to have suffered a fractured facial bone, a broken right ankle, and multiple bruises and lacerations. There has been many more wrong doing by police. There has been many more wrong killings by police. Tamir Rice a 12 year old boy playing outside with a bb gun shot dead even when on the call in the guy suggested that it might be a toy. Eric Garner is another as he told police he couldn’t breathe they choked him and ended up killing…

Have you ever been stuck in your car for four hours in slow moving traffic? Without traffic it would take less than twenty minutes. To me this is such a frustration and aggravation. I experience this on frequent bases while crossing the border back and forth from Thailand. With thousands of people and goods crossing the border each week there should be an expansion to both the Thai and Malaysia checkpoints…
