CLS Program Reflective Essay
It is extremely important that the CLS Program invest specifically in me with this award because I have always had an interest in mastering the language of Chinese. It would be a pleasure to gain the overall experience to learn the language in the specific country that communicates and lives around the language. The best method to learn a language is to be surrounded by the specific language and experience it personally. As a Chinese descent, my parents have always emphasized the importance of being able to communicate not only with my family members, but also with those that understands the language. I was motivated to learn the language when I was a child. I travelled to China to meet my family and I remembered very distinctively that my aunt thought that I did not speak any Chinese because I was born in the United States. From that moment on, I wanted to improve on my Chinese skills to be able to communicate more fluently and have a larger vocabulary usage. In addition, the Chinese language has an ancient and rich culture that I have never been fully exposed to and want to learn about. It amazes me how the history of China dates back to many years ago to the present of having major world affairs opportunities, one of the widely spoken languages of the world, and a rapid growing economy. By increasing my language skills and cultural knowledge, it can help me achieve my future academic and professional career. My career goal is to work as a nurse in a hospital. I want to be able to help my patients with any type of cultural needs and be the person they can reach out to without any language barriers. At least I would have an understanding of the culture if there were specific needs that need to be met. Also, I could be a possible translator at the hospital for Chinese speaking
