C.C. Walker has had a a tough life. Her brother and brother in law died in a fire and then her boyfriend died in one too. She was helping her sister take care of her kids and living her sister's life and not her own. She felt like the town she lived in wasn't the same anymore and she just didn't feel safe or happy. She decided to head out on her own to see if she can live a normal life. She never expected that her car would break down five hours later in a beach town called Treasure Town.

She initially meets two men, mechanics who are very attractive but keep their distance, when she's told her car isn't worth fixing she must make some decisions on where to go and what to do. Getting a job in the local hang out spot just sort of happened.

The story is told from Lyman Lamartine’s point of view as he recounts the relationship he had with his older brother, Henry. He says how they both bought a red Oldsmobile convertible on impulse and traveled the country with it. He recalled it as a very happy and carefree time between the brothers. Then Henry went off to fight in the Vietnam War and when he returned he was a very changed man. He was depressed and lost interest in everything, including the car and his brother. When Lyman realizes the relationship between him and his brother will never be the same, he takes a hammer and beats the car up so it is in horrible condition. Henry sees the broken car and fixes it up. Once finished, the boys drive the car to a lake and Henry tries to give Lyman complete ownership of the car but Lyman constantly refuses. The brothers enjoy a tiny moment of laughter and hopefulness and after spending a couple good minutes together, Henry tells Lyman that he needs to cool off, and he jumps into the river. Apathetically, Henry says that his boots have filled with water and he goes under in the current. Lyman tries to save his brother but can’t. Then he turns the car on and sends it into…

George Reece is the final and most prime example of the theme, life is not always easy. Unlike the previous woman, she was not given a choice on whether to split with her husband and how to raise her children. Her husband was falsely accused of taking part in the fall of the bank and was sent to prison. Mrs. Reece was left to raise their children alone, and instead of neglecting these duties, she took them head on. “And I did it, and sent them forth, into the world all clean and strong.” I believe she gives the best description of what to do when life gets tough herself, “Act well your part, there all the honor lies.” She was handed the part of a single mother raising several children in a time that was even more difficult for single mothers. For her children, she went above and beyond in their raising and when it was time for the to be on their own they were left with strong morals and a good start in life. All due to the strong mindset of their loving…

Becky is chained to her phone and unable to talk about anything other than her work. She stumbles over her words and acts as if she were still a pubescent teenager on her first date. The marketing executive immediately realizes her awkwardness and incapacity to remove herself from her job and quickly asks for the check.
