Bystander Apathy Case Study
Marques Gaines was a 32 year old man who worked at a bar. He was leaving a 7-Eleven and was confronted outside by a man. The man hit Gaines and left him unconscious on a busy street in Chicago. People walked by Gaines and no one protected him from the cold street he was laying on. No more than 2 minutes later was Gaines ran over by a taxi. Marques was pinned under the cab for 3 minutes and then rushed to the hospital. Gaines went through surgery but shortly after the procedure he had passed away.
What made people not help Gaines? Some reasons people say is ¨I don't want to be responsible¨ or ¨I didn't know what to do.¨ In reality, the biggest reason is Bystander Apathy. Bystander Apathy is a social psychological phenomenon that refers to cases in which individuals do not offer any means of help to a victim when other people are present. The fact of this causes many people to become severely injured or possibly die.

If that person fails to dial 3 simple numbers and does nothing, they should suffer the consequences. There are many laws in the world that prevent danger, and yes, of course several people break the law but there are several people who obey. If there wasn’t a law that says “Thou shalt not steal” hundreds of thousands of people would steal each day without a care in the world.
