Males and females of the same species recognize one another by the size, color, shape and vein structure of the wings, all of which are species specific. Many male butterflies deliver more than just sperm to their mates. Most provide a spermatophore, a package of sperm and nutrients the female needs to produce and lay eggs. Females store the sperm in a sac called a bursa until she's ready to lay her eggs. For this reason, males of some species will leave a substance that dries into a film on the female's abdomen in an effort to keep her from mating with other males.

Butterflies do not start out as the colorful flying creatures they start as weak and limited caterpillars growing themselves. Then they begin their process as a chrysalis confined in a cocoon and undergo a transformation known as metamorphosis. The Mirabal sisters are like this too. Under Trujillo oppressive regime, most people, including the Mirabal sisters, felt confined. “I mean in my head after I got to Inmaculada and met Sinita and saw what happened to Lina and realized that I’d just left a small cage to go into a bigger one, the size of a whole country.”(Alvarez 13). Upon realizing the truth about this dictator, Minerva and her other sisters begin to fight the order of things and are transformed. Indeed, Minerva's alias becomes the "butterfly" and we see this enclosed woman break free from the shackles of "El…

In the novel, In the Time of the Butterflies, by Julia Alvarez, the Mirabal sisters, Patria, Minerva, Dede, and Maria Teresa, politically take a stand in hope to fight for their country. They were Las Mariposas, “the butterflies,” the strong sisters of the face of rebellion and leadership fighting against the moths, the political army of Trujillo. Only the strong individual within can decide this fact, and when trying to conform to the social background or hide in the foreground, others will conclude that you are weak. The powerful lyrics to “Butterfly Girl” speak to the stereotypes and help peel back the layers of the cocoon to become free. In my experience the cocoon was weakness that society wove into me and breaking out of that helped me decide to become the strong woman I am today. Defining a human being can be tough, but the mirror can only reflect half of the whole; the unseen butterfly within every…

It is possible to prove that the Ancient Egyptians believed in the possession of a "soul" or animism. For example, the Ancient Egyptians had a name for "soul" (the ba), which artists depicted as a human-headed bird. The association of a bird to the soul is rather interesting in that, to the Ancient Egyptians, birds had a magical power that humans did not: flight. It has also been in very recent times that humans have been obsessed with flight: the Wright Brothers and others like them, for example. To the Egyptian, the ability of flight allowed birds to soar as high as the realm of the gods. Other winged creatures appearing in Egyptian religion include the scarab, the beetle connected with the rising sun and rebirth; the sun, an astral…

    The death of the moth

Woolf assumes her audience is probably, like herself, thoughtful, philosophical, and sensitive, therefore able to be moved by the description of the moth’s struggle against death. Woolf embodied these traits – perhaps too much, as these factors perhaps contributed to the depression that resulted in her eventual suicide. She sees the moth, again perhaps like herself and many of her readers, as something of an oddball: “Moths that fly by day are not properly to be called moths...They are hybrid creatures, neither gay like butterflies nor somber like their own species” (Woolf 1107). Woolf’s initial assertion that the moths are “not proper,” and “hybrid creatures” implies that they fit in nowhere, already establishing a sense of sympathy in the sensitive reader, who, like the author, may feel out of place in the world.…
