In the Time of Butterflies vs. The Brief and Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao

Rafael Trujillo impacted the lives of the families in both, In the Time of Butterflies by
Julia Alverez and The Brief and Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz. While the effects of the tyrannical regime were direct and immediate for the Mirabal family, it was much more indirect and subtle for the Carabal family. Both novels carried overarching themes of love, oppression and the quest for freedom. The Mirabal sisters, Minerva, Patria, Maria and Dede along with their husbands lived under the ruthless and domineering regime of Trujillo from 1938 to 1960. They lived in constant fear of being arrested, molested, raped, imprisoned or killed and anything in between. The time of Trujillo was truly a time of terror and complete oppression in the
Dominican Republic. The sisters along with the other citizens all grew up worshipping him as though he were some sort of god. However as they came of age, they became painfully aware that he and everything he represented was nothing less than pure unadulterated evil.
The Mirabal sisters were rebellious and courageous and took action to fight back against all that the dictator stood for. It was their disdain for oppression that gave them their courage and kept the close as a family. It was their love for one another that brought them through their struggles in the darkest of times and it was their quest for freedom for all of all of the
Dominican Republic that gave them hope. Their quest was so strong that the sisters gave the ultimate sacrifice. The Carabal family on the other hand, lived in a different time. With the exception of La
Inca, and Beli’s father, Abelard, they were all born after Trujillo was killed and no longer in power. However the residuals of his evil lingered and had the reverse effect on the Carabals.
Life for the family all goes downhill after the imprisonment of Abelard by

As written by Isabel Allende, the novel “Ines of My Soul” captures the Spanish Conquest of the South Americas during the early to late 1500’s. In this story of Inés Suárez, an actual historic figure who lived in the early-mid 1500's and one of the founders of Chile, she is a very old woman about to die and is recounting the story of her adventure-filled life to her daughter. She was born into a poor family and spent her childhood in Spain, and eventually made her way to the New World. She lived in Peru for a short period of time and fell in love with Pedro Valdivia. Pedro Valdivia was born into nobility as a hidalgo. Well educated and honorable soldier for the Spanish Army, Pedro goes to the New World in search of fame and adventure. Along his journey he meets Ines and together they fall in love and lead an expedition to Chile to found the colony and the city of Santiago. In addressing the question as to who was more instrumental to the conquest and settlement of Chile during this timeframe, we bring to light both contributions made by both characters, Ines and Pedro. But overall after viewing the contributions made, we see that without the presence of Ines Suarez, this would not have been a successful conquest.…

A fighter from the beginning, she always stood up to get what she aimed for. She didn’t care who her opponent was, the life inside the household was almost suffocating for her and knew that she was born for something else. If it wasn’t for Minerva, the Mirabal sisters would have been just like any other women in the Dominican Republic. "Tears came to my eyes. Something big and powerful spread its wings inside me. Courage, I told myself. And this time, I felt it"(283). She was courageous from the moment she was born till the moment she died. The fragrance of her thoughts were soon spread to others especially Mate. Where Minerva didn’t let her romantic life interfere with her revolutionary lifestyle, it was through her romance that Mate found her path. "I didn 't know what us he was talking about, but I knew right then and there, I wanted to be a part of whatever he was"(142)."Like Dede, I just didn 't have the nerves for revolution, but unlike her, I didn 't have the excuse of a bossy husband"(240), Leandro was s supportive husband who let her follow what she believed in. She realized what freedom for a human being is. She realized it is the right to express the thoughts and live freely rather than being controlled by someone else. This revolutionary thought made her to abort her second baby, "So, if there really is no chance I’ll be out soon, than I want to release this poor creature from the life it might be born…

The transition from childhood to adulthood is never easy. For the characters in Julia Alvarez’s book In the Time of the Butterflies and Elizabeth Nunez’s Bruised Hibiscus, the struggles to grow into one’s self are even starker in worlds of brutality and strife. As both works of historical fiction and coming-of-age narratives, these stories stray from the typical coming-of-age tropes and discuss topics of violence, rebellion, and the struggles women face in patriarchal dominated societies. In the Time of the Butterflies, the Mirabal sisters’ transition to womanhood is anything but easy. These women are confronted with the oppression regime of Rafael Trujillo,…
