(INTRODUCTION)

Passion for the idea YAINGY
“It is estimated up to 5% of teenagers are diagnosed with depression.” (Wales Online, 2012). One article that we have read, suggests that we should look at the US for ideas for prevention strategies and effective early intervention. Summer camps are popular in the US, and we want to adapt this idea for Wales. We believe that the summer camp platform will allow us to be able to bring together our common bond group of children, and engage them in beneficial activities. Wales has high levels of childhood depression (Is this linked to social media, poverty, bullying etc.?)

I was a camp counselor at Camp Wabikon ‒ a co-ed overnight summer camp located in Temagami, Ontario for children who are 6-15 years of age. Along with teaching Red Cross swimming and lifesaving and Tennis, I was my cabin's 'parent' for six weeks. Therefore, I was present with the children at all times. In essence, I was the leader of my cabin's the physical, social and mental development. The main things I learned were the importance of time management and organization , as I had to plan lessons for swimming and Tennis while taking care of my cabin; conflict resolution between campers; and the ability to plan and foresee events (I had to plan camp-wide events and activities for all campers).…

Critics argue that summer camps take children’s attention away from the other friends that children might have in their hometown. However, children already get to see these people for the other nine months out of the year. They go to school with the children of their hometown, play sports with them, and even attend parties with them. Children that go to summer camps have the opportunity to meet other types of people. They will meet children that come from different areas of the country, have different cultures, and have had very different experiences. These new friendships that are forged in the few weeks that children are at summer camp allow children to experience more of the world than just their hometown, and to learn about the lives of people that do not live near them. Children that go to summer camps have the opportunity to meet people from different walks of life that they would not get to meet if they stayed at…

Mental health problems are becoming increasingly prevalent in society, especially in youths. One of the main mental health issues faced by today’s youth is depression. There are many psychological, cultural and social factors that contribute to a serious mental condition, such as depression. The main five Primary Health Care principles are appropriate technology, health promotion, community participation, accessibility and inter-sectoral collaboration. These Primary Health Care principles work hand in hand in approaching and tackling the issue of mental health in youths. A greater focus must be awarded to not only depression and other forms of mental health but special attention needs to be paid to our youth. Today’s youth, however, must also be informed of the various programs and assistance that is available to them.…
