Part I: Decision History – Buff Spalding
Situation: Buff Spalding seems to have all the personal skills necessary to be successful but is not. Everyone appears to like Buff, and he is quite helpful to his coworkers, but it is not clear how Buff maintains his life style given his low earnings. How would you begin your conversation with Buff?
You decided to: Ask to accompany Buff on several sales calls.
Results: You accompanied Buff on several sales calls. You find Buff has very good sales skills but is violating company policy by selling real estate to his clients. What would you do next?
You decided to: Ask around the company discreetly to find out more about Buff's reputation as a salesman and how he is able to maintain his lifestyle when his earnings are so low.
Results: You tried to find out more about how Buff is able to maintain his lifestyle despite his low earnings. You receive proof that Buff is violating company policy by selling real estate to his Omega clients. What would you do next?
You decided to: Consult with your superior about how to handle the situation.

Results: You consulted your boss about how to deal with Buff's low performance and violation of company policy. She informs you that you must correct this situation but without creating more difficulties for the company than necessary. What would you do next?
You decided to: Call Buff in and ask him if the rumors you have heard are true.
Results: You asked Buff if the rumors about his outside deals are true. Because you have clear evidence, he cannot deny your charge. You also learn that he does not highly value the income his Omega job provides. How would you deal with the violation of policy?
You decided to: Tell Buff that he has a choice. He can either resign or end his real estate dealings. If he doesn't resign, you expect him to deliver a plan within 48 hours for ending his real estate involvements.
Results: You told Buff that he either needs to resign or give you a plan for

    Helen Barnett is a supervisor of 15 customer service representatives for National Insurance, a company specializing in home insurance. These representatives each have cubicles that are furnished with a computer, a desk, and a phone headset, but of course Helen Barnett, the supervisor has her own office. One of the representatives named James Erskine had been employed with the company for the last six months and on his 90-day performance review, he got a satisfactory. However, Lorraine Smalls is a co-worker who sat on the cubicle close to Erskine was the one who discovered the pictures when she quickly tried to recover some data to respond to a customer when her computer malfunctioned. It was not unusual for representatives to use another staff member’s computer. Smalls immediately called Barnett and as she viewed the browser, it shows that the website was viewed more than a dozen times that morning. As a supervisor, she wanted to confront him about using company time in such an unproductive manner. When Erskine returned from lunch, he was confronted and he immediately reasoned that he visited the site during break time and felt that it was an invasion of his privacy/ Barnett told him that she would report to the Human Resource Manager but Erskine himself went to the Manager, Dale Gibbons and expressed how he was violated.     Case Summary: Stalwart Industrial Products is a manufacturer and seller of a wide variety of industrial tools that they sell to numerous resellers and end users. The company was founded in 1935 and prides itself on producing quality tools that last for a very long time. Stalwart’s national sales manager, Tom Beesman, has been well regarded as a successful leader since taking over his position three years ago that has helped to guide the sales force to a great deal of success. But, now Tom has two problems that are causing him massive headaches. The first problem is that one of his star salespeople, Charlie Davidson, is starting to perform below the expectations that he established for himself. Davidson has worked for Stalwart for three years and he hit 112 percent of his quota his first year and 119 percent of his quota the second year. He did this by prospecting and meeting with customers 14 hours a day during the week and writing proposals and doing reports on weekends. He was on pace to exceed quota again this year, but after having his first child two months ago, he’s down to 50 to 60 hours a week and his sales are reflecting this. Tom had hoped to make Davidson a member of the management team, but in casual conversation with him, Davidson indicated he wanted to remain in sales because that’s where the big money is.     Centurion media is a company that is in the business of broadcasting/publishing advertisement and commercials. The president of the Cable TV Division, Joseph Fowler, created a contract with Northpark, a consumer of selling advertisement that has not been sold by the parent company. Richard Bennett, a regional vice president in the Cable Division of Centurion Media. Bennett was one of the people that received this contract without any prior knowledge of the contract and was asked to deploy the content of contract. He was faced with a serious ethical dilemma that would impact his career, family, and co-workers. He believed that a contract executed by the new president of his division, Joseph Fowler, would cause significant financial losses for Bennett's own division and the company. Bennett suspected that Fowler might have a serious conflict of interest, since he owned stock and options in Northpark-the company with which he had negotiated the contract.
