Brother's Song 'Only In America'
“Only in America” is a great song that talks about having pride in America. This Song talks a lot about patriotism and what common things are in America and what makes us have pride, in this song pride is a good thing. Unlike the song, in the book scarlet ibis pride is a bad thing. Brother wanted to earn more pride by teaching doodle how walk and many other things because he was ashamed of Doodle being crippled. Brother’s pride is a bad thing because it ended with doodle being dead.

Brother was ashamed of having a crippled brother so he helped doodle everyday because he wanted more pride. In the book Scarlet Ibis Brother set out to teach Doodle how to walk, run, swim, and paddle a boat. “When doodle was five years old, I was embarrassed at having a brother of that age that couldn't walk, so I set out to teach him” (Hurst 2). When having a brother with disabilities it's a good thing to help them out. But in this story Brother was only trying to help doodle to better himself. If Brother did not have as much pride and was not as embarrassed about Doodle he would not have pushed Doodle like he did. But in the end brother pushed Doodle to hard and it does not end well. Brother helps Doodle because he is ashamed as wants more pride. …show more content…
In this story Brother teaches Doodle to do many things but then a storm came in and Brother and Doodle were running home but Doodle got left for the dead. “I heard Doodle, who had fallen behind, cry out, “Brother, Brother don’t leave me! Don’t leave me!” (Hurst 6) Throughout the story Doodle had some disabilities and Brother was ashamed of that so he started to teach Doodle lots of things. Brother started to be much harder on Doodle as school was starting up. This results in Doodle being in a not so healthy condition. Brothers mission for pride ended up way worse then brother thought it

His family is relatively poor and as a result Dave has to balance both school and working on his father’s farm everyday. The story begins when Dave is on a field trip with his classmates. He and his friends end up accidentally destroying someone's property and as a result they have to pay for the damage. All of the students had enough money to pay the debt off except for Dave. Because of this, his teacher, Professor Herbert made him stay after school to work in order to pay the debt off in a different way. When Dave gets home and explains what happened to his father, Luster becomes very anger. Luster had never gone to school, but he did not want Dave to live as difficult of a life as he did. Luster believes that it is unfair for Dave to suffer an extra punishment just because he comes from a poor family. Luster then decides to go to school with Dave the next day to confront his teacher. Once he arrives, he angrily explains to Professor Herbert his opinion on the matter.     White America is a song in which Eminem creates many contradictions to show inconsistencies in the American social structure. These contradictions are important because they reveal a critical flaw in the American society that disillusions both immigrants and natives into thinking America is a leveled playing field for capitalistic ventures. In his introduction, Eminem makes a contradictory comparison that later becomes apparent in the second part of the verse, describing America as "the stripes and the stars for the rights men have died for to protect/ The women and men who have broke their necks for the freedom of speech the United States government has sworn to uphold". The first line is written closely in anapestic pentameter, meaning two unstressed syllables followed by a stressed syllable in a 5 foot line (Annis, par. 8-11), with stress put on "stripes" and "stars" which creates an image of patriotism. Whizzing sounds can be heard in the background of the song, reminiscent of the "rocket’s red glare" in the national anthem or the sound of the Blue Angels F-16s fighter jets, a military symbol of America. The next three stressed words "rights", "died", and "protect" reminds Americans of the sacrifices the country had to make to receive such rights as "the freedom of speech the United States government has sworn to uphold"; to appreciate these rights since they are here due to the sacrifices of many "women and men". Eminem addresses the dominant narrative in the United States that all Americans possess these natural rights - notice that the government’s job is to "protect" ‘and "uphold" these rights meaning they were pre-existent and not "given", which would mean that they were nonexistent before. So being an American automatically means equitable treatment as other Americans. Eminem uses this fact to begin to show the "hypocrisy of democrac" or what Lisa Lowe calls the "existence of exclusions…by the promise of inclusion" (529). "Or so it’s told…" Eminem starts…
