Breaking The Norm A social norm is only a guideline. Sometime people or society used to decide which behaviors are acceptable. A great example of this would be manors. We expect people to say "please" and "thank you." Of course it's not against the law to not say those things, people just judge you if you don't. In some cases social norms can be laws. To me, a social norm can be referred to wether or not a person uses a blinker. I get very upset and judge people as jerks when they don't use one. Of course this is against the law but no one gets a ticket for it. Considering the time of year I used Thanksgiving versus Christmas when I broke the norm. I went to homeland grocery store one night and as I was standing in line to check out I started to Singapore Christmas song before Thanksgiving. As I started singing "We Wish You a Merry Christmas" I could see I was starting to get some attention. A few of the people reacted differently. One older man probably in his 60's just smiled at me, while a younger woman started giving me a death glare. When I finally made it to the register the cashier had the nerve to ask me rudely "you know its not even Thanksgiving right?" Another way I broke the norm was at a baby shower. One of my cousins is having a baby boy. What's interesting about this one was I was in a church singing a song off of family guy. I really don't think the old Christian women appreciated it. Anyways as she started opening gifts and it got quite I started singing prom night dumpster baby off of family guy. Everyone's expressions were the same shocked and appalled. I was almost immediately asked to leave . I felt so bad, I had to explain myself. They thought it was kinda funny but I don't think my cousin will ever forgive me. when I was breaking the norms I felt dumb. I love the attention, but I prefer it to be positive attention rather than negative attention. I think it wasn't just

Having a social rule is not a bad thing, it helps everyone understand how to behave. Furthermore by complying with the social norm it provides a level of respect to others. No one wants to be that guy who just can’t get along. Conforming to the group is a way to flow downstream, but sometimes you’re up the creek without a…

I didn’t want to annoy the employee so I just ordered a Big Mac. When I pulled up to the window, I was nervous; I didn’t want the employee to see me because I had just made a fool of myself. But, the employee did see me and noticed that I was a teenager. He immediately assumed that I was part of a prank and asked me, “So where’s the camera?” to which I replied “What camera?” He chuckled, handed me the Big Mac, and I drove off. On the drive home, I laughed the whole time. I kept picturing the man’s face when he asked me where the camera was. But, along with the fun, this experiment was also a great learning experience. I learned that violating a social norm isn’t such a big deal after all. Before, I thought that doing something like this would be embarrassing and that people, like the McDonald’s employees, would make fun of me. But the only response I got from the McDonald’s employees was a little chuckle and life continued. Perhaps I shouldn’t worry about my social mistakes too much because the people around me don’t really care as much as I think they…

For this assignment I was asked to break one of these social rules and to report on the experience. I have a feeling that many people may have been hesitant when prompted to unexpectedly deviate from a social norm, I am happy to report that I am not one of these people. I have always enjoyed playing with these unwritten standards and was looking forward to this experiment. Just as I was picking which one I would do, my phone rang and made the decision for me. It was my sister on the other end and she was waiting for me to greet her in the normal fashion, with either a “Hello” or my most often used “Ey yo!”.…

In my experiment of breaking the norm, I did two different things. in one of my “experiments” I would hold doors anywhere I where for the people that were behind me and wait for a response, when the person was educated enough to say thank you I would smile and let it go. When the opposite happened, whenever the person behind me did not say thank you I would compliment myself. I would thank myself for holding the door instead.…

We see norms in our everyday life but ones stand out more than others. That is exactly what I wanted to do with my experiment, make everyone remember my norm by the humor and awkwardness it brings. To get a better understanding of a norm Simone Isadora Flynn states in her article that “Norms refer to conditions for social relations between groups and individuals, for the structure of society and the difference between societies, and for human behavior in general. Norms are shared rules, customs, and guidelines that govern society and define how people should behave in the company of others.” Although that there are many different types of norms the one I have committed is a folkway “Folkways refer to norms that protect common conventions. Most people in a society follow traditional folkways but failure to conform to them is considered neither illegal nor immoral.”…

Clearly, this type of social norm acts as an informal social control; one who does not comply with the social standard is not punished in any official or direct way. Yet it seems a clear assumption that one would assume that disobeying or refusing to comply with this social norm would be met with some form of interpersonal reaction to show displeasure or unhappiness with a non-normative response to the question. My intent, in breaking this specific social norm, was to discover exactly what type of reaction I would receive from others.…

A virtual community consists of social norms just like the real world. Thus, it also creates social pressure that convinces people to conform online. The goal of this assignment is to violate the social norms on social media. Norm breaking reveals the hidden rules that dictate our thoughts and behaviors in social interactions. Instagram is an app that I use religiously and spend a lot of time on. For this experiment, I posted 6 mundane photos that are trash can, plastic bag, doorknob, spoon, and a dirty sock. I also used exuberant hashtags such as “#amazing”, “#beautiful”, “#lifeisgood” and “#happy”. I have always worked hard to create and maintain a positive reputation on Instagram by posting impeccable or extremely filtered photographies.…

    Breaking A Social Norm

There are two types of norms, formal norms and informal norms. Formal norms can be viewed as rules or laws that are usually written down, they are strict and punishable if broken in any way. One example are the laws in the United States created by the Government in order to have some control over the population. People who break these laws are mostly criminals and are punished by either being fined, sent to jail or if it’s something major, they receive the death penalty. Therefore, these formal norms are important because if they didn’t exist, then murderers’ and rapists’ would be able to walk freely. Informal norms are your unspoken standards that society has set, they are not written in stone and we all kind of just go with the flow. There’s no punishment when we deviate from the norm but we do risk social humiliation. For example, when you’re at the movie theater, you know that you have to be silent so that you don’t disturb others. If you are loud and obnoxious, you’ll most likely be shushed or you could even get kicked out. That’s just one of many unwritten rules that society has…

For my norm violation, I decided to go out into a public place and briefly interact with complete strangers. To achieve this, I decided to simply say hi to individuals as they passed by me. In picking my location, I wanted to be somewhere with a lot of foot traffic. Ultimately, I decided to go to Fred Meyer on a Saturday, when I knew it would be busier, and start saying hi to unsuspecting shoppers. Even though this was a minor norm violation, it still made me feel very uncomfortable. Each time I went to speak I became nervous and scared people would respond to me negatively. After pushing through the awkwardness, however, and saying hello to large handful of people, I seemed to be getting a handful of the same reactions. People would either…

    Essay On Breaking A Norm

Some people thought it was funny and said it back, and some people went into detail on how saying “I love you” to someone should be because it’s meant. No one got angry, but they sure did feel awkward and uncomfortable. When I would go to class I wasn’t sure if it was a good idea to tell a professor I loved them since it could of even be seen as disrespectful. I decided to still break the norm with them too since I was doing a social experiment. My professors looked at me extremely weird and didn’t talked to me for the rest of the class. I talked to them after class and told them I was doing an experiment on breaking a social norm to see how people reacted after saying something that they are not used. They all thought it was funny and a good idea. I thought it was interesting on how all three professors reacted the same way. I have four professors, but only did it to three since I didn’t break the norm with professor Wagner. My sociology was is too big and I am always focused on listening to the lecture that I always forgot. Therefore, the trouble I came across with wasn’t something that was hard to confront; I actually enjoyed…

For my folkway violation I chose to position myself six inches away from someone during a conversation. I chose to try this particular one because I knew my mom would give me the best, honest reaction. She has always had a small pet peve that was people getting in her personal space. I thought to myself this is the perfect norm violation for me to use. I was able to easily approach my mom at home where she would be completely clueless of the stunt.…

    Breaking the Social Norm

My social norm was walking on campus backwards for an entire day. This was a major challenge to me because when people are not doing the expected in a social environment, I have many opinions on those particular people. So this was definitely a new experience for me. When I first knew this was my idea, I was very nervous and anxious. I was so worried about what other students on campus would think about me. I had various questions going on in my mind. What were others going to say about me? Would the students make fun of me? How would I react if they were to respond to my actions? After the first initial thoughts, I became excited. I wondered how many people would be humored by me walking backwards to class. I was scared that my observations would change my perspective on a lot of ideas. I was nervous because I felt like I was not ready to change my perspective on everything after only one day. This was a huge step for me. I knew that I could not be laughing because the experiment would then be pointless. So I gathered myself together the night before and hoped this major challenge would go smoothly.…

    Social Norm

The social norm that I chose to violate was to go into an elevator and instead of turning around and facing the door upon entering; I had my back to the door and faced the other people in the elevator. In normality a person enters an elevator, pushes the button for their desired floor and turns to face the door to avoid eye contact with strangers, and prepare to exit the elevator. The reason I choose to violate this particular social norm was because I’ve never seen anyone else do it and I was curious as to how people would respond to my deviant behavior. I decided to perform my social norm violation in the elevator at Deaconess Hospital. I picked this location because I know there would be all different types of people coming on the elevator so it would give me a good sample and I could get what I needed out of it.…
