I was raised in a house hold where the use of profanity was more common than family dinners; I’ve adopted my family’s potty mouths and I would like to stop because it drives me crazy and my boyfriend says its un-lady like. When I’m in a professional setting, around my parents and other elders like a light switch I can turn the profanity off. When I’m interacting with my peers it’s almost like I don’t have a filter, unless I say the sentence in my head a few times before I actually verbalize it. My New Year’s resolution for the last three years has been to stop using profanity and I’ve failed miserably each year, this year I told myself that I’m a work in progress and I’ll try my best to work on it. During my baseline period I noticed the I used profanity once while in front of my mom and I quickly apologized; however, while with peers and my boyfriend in an course of an hour I used profanity more than forty times like twenty times per half hour. I’m going to give it my all to reduce the amount of profanity that I use each day, by reducing the amount of profanity that I use each day the less dependent that I will become on the bad behavior (bad language).
The first technique that I believe can help to rid me of my potty mouth is reinforcements; which can be described by Skinner as anything that will work towards increasing the occurrence of the operant response. Terry (2009) (pg. 101) I can use reinforcements (positive or negative) to decrease the amount of times that I use profanity throughout the day, using reinforcements to strengthen my mental capabilities and keep the profanity switch turned off. The article The Use of Reinforcer Assessments in Evaluating Psychotropic Medication Effects considers the effects of reinforcements, while working with patients which would increase or decrease the patient’s unwanted mental behaviors. Its cause is associated with exposure to the sun, consumption of alcohol, and the use of tobacco in all forms. Snuff, chewing tobacco, cigarettes, and cigars are the major risk factors for oral cancer. Cells in the stratum spinosum of the epidermis undergo anaplasia (reversion to an immature, undifferentiated form), transforming into cancer cells and dividing rapidly. Incidence of metastasis is low if the lesion is removed at an early stage. Bobs physician recommends immediate surgical excision of the lesion. Following excision of the lesion, which had tumor-free margins, further examination and testing revealed no signs of metastasis (migration to other tissues).     According to Layton (2013), “…the best way to increase the chances of overcoming a hoarding problem is to catch it in its early stages” (para. 19). It is ideal for a loved one of a hoarder to detect the problem. In worse situations, it may be a landlord finding the problem. There are many ways for hoarders to get help. Therapy is one option. Frost and Steketee (2010), both professors of psychology, did a therapy outcome study for hoarders.
