Deforestation has been a largely debated issue around the world for years, but most of the talk of deforestation involves the Amazon. Both sides of this issue have to be looked at before one can truly make an informed decision about whether or not this is a good direction to take for Brazil.…
Following her husband’s death in 1689, with eight of her children still unmarried and living at home, Gluckel continued single-handedly to manage the family’s business affairs in Hamburg and at the trade fairs she attended in various cities. This is the focus of Book Five in Gluckel’s memoir’s, she mourns over her husband’s death, engages in the kiddish, and continues to read the Torah day and night. A major theme within Book Five is the aspect of a positive Jewish community along with Gluckel’s ability to conduct business transactions while constantly traveling and almost always being aided by fellow Jews from the city. Also, she appears to have been an active and equal partner in all decisions with both family affairs and business matters. As a result, when her husband was asked on his deathbed whether he wished to leave any final words, he replied, “I have no instructions, my wife, she knows everything. Let her do as she has done until now.” (p151).…
Syncretism generally refers to the process of reconciling or melding of differing views or beliefs or uses. This can happen intentionally, or by a natural, unconscious process. More or less discrete cultures that come into contact with one another, either through geographical proximity, migration, conquest, trade and exploration, or in other ways, will start to syncretize aspects of each culture. A melting pot is a metaphor for a society where many different types of people blend together as one. America is often called a melting pot.…
I personally don’t believe good stewardship and sustainable use of natural resources are being practiced. The farmers are burning the land to clear and make some space with isn’t a good thing for the environment. Having all that fire, isn’t safe for the community either. Trees is what a lot of animals eat without them, we wouldn’t have any animals. They go hungry sue to the lack of trees. In my opinion, if they are cutting trees down, they should just simply plant another. The suggestions I would make is that the people of Brazil should come together and talk before making a decision. People just need to understand that the Amazon is a beautiful natural resource and should learn how to use it wisely.…
d. As the largest snake in the world, an average-sized anaconda can be 30 feet long and 550 pounds. Imagine five 10-year-olds lying down head to foot to match this extraordinary length. Also, to match its weight, it would take approximately eleven kids. Anacondas can be big around as a grown man.…
Brazil’s cultural influences are as important as the United States. Brazil has many influences. Brazil’s culture is influenced by festivals, Brazil’s culture is also influenced by dating and marriage traditions because people have started to be more attached to this particular tradition of different dating and marriage traditions. Another one of Brazil's culture influences is education. Education there in Brazil is not as functional as the United States education. Brazil has a big attachment to traditions, maybe because it keeps the citizens in one piece. Brazil’s culture is influenced by dating, marriage traditions, and education.…
Imagine thousands of colorful, sweet smelling flowers and the sound of insects and animals along with the soothing noise of a stream. This place is called Brazil. Brazil has all of these things and more including busy cities and huge forests. Let me tell you more about this wonderful place.…
For as long as there have been civilizations, people have separated themselves into groups. Most of the time into groups like: the have and the have not’s or us vs them. This has happened in Brazil between the upper and lower class. Brazil is a country with a very small to non-existent middle class, causing a huge gap between the two classes. This huge gap is causing the us versus them mentality or a we/they divide between the upper and lower class, based on a process of social categorization. The central hypothesis of the mentality is that group members of an in-group will seek to find the negative aspects of an out-group, thus enhancing their self-image. The in-group in Brazil is the upper class where as the lower class has been named the…
In another source Native Amazonians died because an organization funded projects to “improve” the Amazon's coasts, which is a form of industrialism. Lastly, in the third source, some Amazonian’s land and livelihood were destroyed because Brazil infiltrated their part of the forest to use the forest's resources to create cheaper energy for their land. So essentially, one could conclude that exercise of industrializing this forest is causing a negative impact on native Amazonians and their…
This class report is about the Amazonian Tribes and why the rain forest is important to them. The many things that will be discussed in this report are when they arrived, where they migrated from, and how settlers have affected the rain forest for the Amazonians. The different resources that are in the rain forest will also be discussed to give a better idea on why many people have come to the rainforest to settle and collect these resources. The way the Brazil Government has used the rain forest for their people and what they have done to the Amazon tribes to affect life for them in the rain forest will also be in this report.…
Brazil is one of the most religiously diverse countries in the world. Although the Roman Catholic Church is the dominant religion, it is important to note that Protestants and evangelical churches have a sizeable population. The other minor religions include African and indigenous traditional religions. In Brazil, religion and politics are intertwined in that most people often listen to the priests when deciding if they will vote for a certain candidate. [1]…
Brazil is one of the most visited place in the world and also one of the most diverse countries in the world. More than 75millon people of African decent live in Brazil, this makes it the second largest black population in the world. Its attracts a large number of people because of it architecture, slums and rainforest. Brazil is contradictory because its was the last country to abolish slavery but also the first to claim that it was a racial democracy. Most people might not know that Brazil has its racial problems and that it has been going on for a long time. Brazilian race relations and conceptions of race are somewhat different from the United States. In Brazil most African descendents are people live in slums called the favelas. The favelas are small over-crowded communities, which are built on hills. One of the largest is in a city called Rio de Janeiro and it’s full of hundreds of poor urban people.…
In many tropical countries, the majority of deforestation results from the actions of poor subsistence cultivators. However, in Brazil only about one-third of recent deforestation can be linked to cultivators. A large portion of deforestation in Brazil can be attributed to land clearing for pastureland by commercial and speculative interests, misguided government policies, inappropriate World Bank projects, and commercial exploitation of forest resources. For effective action it is imperative that these issues be addressed. Focusing solely on the promotion of sustainable use by local people would neglect the most important forces behind deforestation in Brazil.…
While it was initially expected 5.000 families to be settled, more than 150.000 individuals migrated to the region (Schwartzman, 1986). These unsettled families started to clean new fragments of forest in order to find new and sustainable crop areas. In addition, the loggers complained by the lack of compensation provided by the Brazilian government in order to stop their activities in that area, and illegal logging started to play an important role as well (Mahar & Ducrot, 1998). After suffering with pressure of many activists’ groups, the project was halted in 1985 and concluded in 1990, with 9 years of existence (Schwartzman, 1986; P006319,…
result of the destruction of the rainforests. Secondly, the Amazon rainforest is sometimes called the "lung of the world" because its production of over 1/4 of the world's oxygen makes it possible for us to breathe. The faster we eliminate forests, the closer we get to our own impending doom. Obviously, this behaviour is suicidal, and must be stopped. A lot of land in the rainforest is given to landless people by the government..…
