Boys And Girls Club Experience
My expectations of the experience compared to the reality of my experience were completely different. I didn’t expect much before volunteering because I had never volunteered before. I did know that we were to assist the children with their homework. Nevertheless, I enjoyed volunteering and I will continue to go to the Boys and Girls Club. This experience taught me to be open-minded about trying new things.
The life experience of the population served by the Boys and Girls Club was similar to me because they have a diverse amount of nationalities. When I volunteered there were at least four or five different nationalities within our group of children. It’s not surprising because Las Vegas is a diverse city. I also noticed that the children had a strong bond with the workers and other children. It was a community with a community.
This experience definitely pushed me out of my comfort zone because I wasn’t used to dealing with that many children at once. At first the children were reserved but after they had their snack they became active. However, there were all talkative and well behaved. I imagined it would be five or six students per advisor. The Club was also smaller than I expected and located right next to an elementary school. I believe that in Las Vegas they should encourage young adults to volunteer to help their local community. I would also like to suggest building more Boys and Girls Club or expanding the current facilities to help have more availability to parents and their children. It broadened my understanding of the Boys and Girls Club because it was amazing volunteer and help give back to my community. It help the parents, children, and workers
