Borderlands Research Paper
In short, borderlands mean the bar or the partition between two entities, whether it was invisible or apparent. To expand on this idea, a tangible borderland could be between two areas isolated by a physical object, for example Mdina, Malta, where the 0.3 sq. mi. city is walled from the rest of the country. An intangible borderland could be the discrimination between the Whites and the Blacks in the society, for example Olympia (1863) by Edouard Manet. Where there are two conceptual borderlands: the first is the borderland of color, showing that the black race was a minority compared to the white race by the servant being black; and the second borderland is the color contract from using very bright and dark colors in the painting.
