Bone Cancer Research Paper
Bone cancer is a tumor within the bones. There are different types of bone cancer. The type of cancer is determined by the type of tumor and its location. Benign tumors are not cancerous nor do they spread. Malignant tumors, however, are cancerous and can spread to other parts of the body. Bone cancer affects people of all ages, but the type of cancer differs between age groups. When a person is diagnosed with bone cancer they must undergo a series of testing to determine type of cancer and the state of the tumor. Some of the tests include biopsies, CAT (CT) Scans, MRI’s, bone scans, and X-rays. It is most oftenly located around the knee. Osteosarcoma is one of the most common cancers found in teens and young adults and the most commonly found bone cancer. It typically affects children and young adults between the ages of 10-25. The tumors can sometimes appear during growth spurts and are more common in people over the average height. Symptoms include pain and swelling usually in an arm or leg and sometimes a lump. The tumor can sometimes metastasize (spread) to other areas of the body. Treatment options include chemotherapy, bone grafts/ limb-salvage surgery, and amputation. Bone grafting is a procedure to replace bone after it has been removed in order to remove the tumor. Doctors determine the type of tumor by histologic grading. Malignant lesions can be broken down into grades; low is grade 1, medium is grade 2, and high is grade 3. Malignant tumors are also called chondrosarcomas and benign tumors are called enchondromas. Enchondromas rarely cause pain and if there is pain it is caused from surrounding tissue. Chondrosarcoma patients have a long history of constant pain that can interfere with sleep. Treatment options include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation
