“The simple things in life are also the most extraordinary things” (Coelho, 1988). After several years, the issue of Global Warming resurfaced and today, people can feel the effects of the said problem which a lot of researchers are working on to find the remedy for the planet’s major problem. A plastic material is any of a wide range of synthetic or semi-synthetic organic solids that are moldable. Plastics are typically organic polymers of high molecular mass, but they often contain other substances. They are usually synthetic, most commonly derived from petrochemicals, but many are partially natural. Most plastics are derived from propylene, a simple chemical component of petroleum. When heated up in the presence of a catalyst, individual chemical units monomers of propylene link together by forming extremely strong carbon-carbon bonds with each other. This results in polymers long chains of monomers called polypropylene. This content of plastic makes it hard to degrade
On top of the list of alternatives for plastics that we currently use , is the Bioplastic which is one of many remedies scientists are really looking forward for and relying on. Bioplastics are plastics derived from renewable biomass sources, such as vegetable fats and oils, corn starch, pea starch or microbiota. Bioplastic types such as starch-based plastics or PHA are potentially biodegradable. This feature is directly linked to the chemical structure of the polymer and can benefit particular applications. Biodegradable plastic types offer new ways of recovery and recycling (organic recycling). If certified compostable according to international standards such as the EN 13432 (preferably by an independent third party), these plastics can be composted in industrial composting plants.

    Plastic or its scientific name polyethylene is a type of polymer. Polymers are defined as a large molecules consisting of specific small repeating monomers that combine or react together. In this case, plastic or polyethylene is made up of small monomers called ethylene (ethene). Most plastics are a combination of other organic and inorganic compounds; 20% of the content of a plastic is composed of additives. Biodegradable plastics are usually derived from proteins such as those that are present in a potato plant. Polymers are large molecules consisting of many repeating units, called monomers. Polymers can be made out of starch which is composed of long chains of glucose molecules. This study focuses mainly on making biodegradable plastics, which is certainly safer than non-biodegradable plastics, from potato starch. Biodegradable plastics made from raw materials are completely reusable and can be composted easily. Potato starch contains minimal protein and fat. Potato starch is a Polymer made of long chains of glucose units joined together. Potato starch contains two polymers: Amylopectin, highly-branched molecules, making up the majority of the starch found in plants, and Amylose which contains long, chain-like molecules. Potato starch is a versatile material because it has the ability to bind and thicken; it can also be used as an ingredient in making papers, construction materials, adhesives, and other non-food products. There are many product developments that are based on the starch of the potato, products like biodegradable eco-plastics, foam packaging chips, carrier bags, and trays that can be used for food. In terms of biochemistry, starch is a polysaccharide sugar. Its sugar has a component called glucose. The two components, Amylose and Amylopectin, determines the characteristic of the starch of the potato. Normally, the ratio of amylose to Amylopectin is around 1:4 to 1:5. The most valued characteristics of starch such as good adhesive properties are due to the Amylopectin, which is therefore the more coveted component.
