Biblical Allusions In The Gift Of The Magi
What brings out the true values in “The Gift of the Magi”?Biblical allusions in the story can be found at when O.Henry compared Della and Jim’s riches with the riches of the Queen of Sheba and King Solomon. The comparison between their riches show that what Jim and Della had was enough to be compared with famous wealthy people, but it isn’t what they have materially at the end that makes them rich but what they have in the inside. Jim and Della’s treasures versus the treasures of the Queen of Sheba and King Solomon. “Had the queen of Sheba lived in the flat across the airshaft, Della would have let her hair hang out the window some day to dry just to depreciate Her Majesty's jewels and gift…” (O.Henry) The Queen of Sheba is a known Biblical …show more content…
By invoking the Bible at moments O. Henry makes "Gift of the Magi" feel more morally which is different from Biblical allusion. Jim and Della’s possessions compared to those 3 Biblical figures bring out how important and precious Della’s hair and Jim’s watch are to themselves, but they had to give them away. But that isn’t all what the imagery of King Solomon and The Queen of Sheba gives to the readers. By bringing them up, and by mentioning the Magi, O. Henry creates a sharp contrast between their spectacular riches and the obvious poverty and Jim and Della. “In the story ‘ The Gift of the Magi’ the two main characters, Jim and Della were just like the Magis... because they gave the wisest gift of all.”(Dixies). The 3 Biblical characters were financially rich which makes contrast to the poverty the couple had. “Biblical story of the three Magis which is about three wise men that are from the east traveling to Bethlehem, following the north star in order to present gifts to the infant Jesus…”(Sarashita). Both Della and Jim wanted to give each other something for Christmas, they made the wisest choice on what to give to each other just like what the Magis did when they were going to give Jesus a

The allusion to the Magi seems inappropriate at first to the reader. For, after all, the Magi were a select sect of hereditary priesthood who had extraordinary religious knowledge and their gifts were of great monetary value, intended to suggest great respect and devotion. However, as the reader reflects upon the characters in the story, he/she soon realizes that Jim and Della are wealthier and more knowledgeable in the ways of love than elite priests of profound and extraordinary knowledge. And, with the magic of true love, "two foolish children" realized more than the Magi: Ironically, they realize the most valuable gift is the gift of unselfish love.…

The Gift of the Magi shows many ironic aspects. How Della adores her hair, thinking so highly that no queen jewels could ever match the beauty of her hair. Or how Jim thinks his watch is so priceless that no king could ever have such a jewel, but when wanting to show their affection to one another they sell their priceless jewels just to find out that they each sold their priceless jewels to get something for one another. One a comb for the now missing hair, the other a golden chain for the now sold watch.…

The irony in 'The Necklace' becomes apparent as the very item that had brought Mathilde's dream of 'high living' to life was her and her husband's eventual downfall. Mathilde loses the 'diamond' necklace which she borrowed from her friend and the couple are forced to work for ten years to pay in full the debt they developed after buying a replacement. As it is revealed in the end by Mathilde's friend (from whom she borrowed the necklace) it was actually made of a paste, a cheap substance that has the luster of diamond. In 'The Gift of the Magi', Della forgoes her most prized possession, her long hair, in order to buy her husband, Jim, a Christmas present, a chain to accompany his gold watch which is purpoted that even King Solomon would be jealous of. The irony here is that Jim sells his most prized possession, his golden watch (the very same that Della bought the chain…

The plots of these two stories differ from each other, but are still both ironic. In “The Necklace” Mathildes husband got her an invitation to a high class party, and she got upset and made a big deal about it because she didn’t have a new dress. She also wanted a necklace to go with that dress. So her husband bought her a new dress, and she ended up borrowing a necklace from her friend who is high class. She ends up losing the necklace and having to pay 10 years of debt due to that, she saw her friend 10 years later and found out the necklace was a fake. In “The Gift of The Magi” They both love each other and wanted to get Christmas presents for each other. So Della cut her hair off so she could by Jim a chain for his antique pocket. Jim sold his pocket watch to buy Della a set of combs for her hair. So that’s why it makes the story’s ending Ironic.…

In the short story, "The Gift of the Magi" by O. Henry, irony is used to make the reader expect something to happen but the opposite happens. For example, Della had bought Jim a fob using the money she got for selling her beloved and prized hair. When she showed him his present he said, "I sold the watch to get the money to buy your combs." (306) This shows that they both had sacrificed the things they had been most prideful of just so that their partner could be happy, which was nice by foolish. It was unexpected to them that the the other would sacrifice their favorite thing, making the gifts useless because they were not able to use them. In addition, the name Dillingham from Mr. James Dillingham Young…

Sometimes things seem to be so different from each other that in the end, they are much more similar that they pretend to be. However, happiness is different than being rich, and while Mathilde does not care about her husband happiness, Della fights for her husband happiness and at the end, both realizes that happiness is only a relative thing, a state of mind.…

Della the Humane Woman “ The really important kind of freedom involves attention, and awareness, and discipline, and effort, and being able truly to care about other people and to sacrifice for them, over and over, in myriad petty little unsexy way, everyday” (David Foster Wallace).
