Adoration of the Magi
Adoration of the Magi by Sandro Botticelli is a Renaissance painting located in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence Italy. Botticelli painted many of these adoration paintings on commission but the Adoration of the Magi seems to be the most popular. This painting is on a wooden altarpiece and shows different people looking at one another with different expressions on their face. Botticelli is in the bottom right hand corner looking you the observer.
The painting is Tempera on Wood and uses distinct bright colors to represent the wealth of the people who are in it. This adoration has biblical connotations and uses historical traditions for example making the Virgin Mary where a blue cloak. All of the figures were designed to create geometric design on the panel. Botticelli does not pay much attention to linear texture. This painting was commissioned for a funerary chapel in the church of Santa Maria Novella in Florence.
The bright vivid colors attracted me to this work; I found it interesting how the artist played off of mostly reds and blues and I liked how my attention was immediately drawn to the center of the painting. All of the people seemed to be involved in the miraculous birth of the Jesus. The greatest aesthetic strength of this painting is its use of vivid color, the aesthetic weakness I found was the lack of the artistic use of shadow. I believe this piece does have lasting value; it is undoubtedly a beautiful piece of art and has stood the test of time as a masterpiece. The painting has particular cultural significance to the city of Florence in Italy. It shows how this particular class of Florentines dressed and looked.
Botticelli’s Adoration of the Magi is a beautiful painting depicting a noble Florentine family. It takes a historical moment (the birth of Jesus Christ) and incorporates the patron’s images. I found this painting to be rich in color and detail and a window into the period in which the patrons lived.

Perhaps the most noticeable part of this painting is Saint Luke’s piercing gaze. I believe this to be the focal point of the painting. His large gray eyes seem to looking to the right, not right at the viewer, his stare is slightly eerie. He is an older man; the signs of age can be seen on his forehead and the graying in his facial hair. Saint Luke’s beard is long, like you would expect of the time. It is very wavy and seems to curl in places. His head seems to be large which during the time this piece was painted was a common style toward the end of that century was. Saint Luke is wearing a vibrant blue robe like the types you would see in religious artworks. The detail in the color of his robe stands out. For instance, darker shades were used in parts of the folds of the material. The lighter parts are the outside, it gives the illusion that there may be a light facing the painting and the light is reflecting off his robe. Another important detail is in front of his heart is a cross painted in the lighter shade of blue of the robe. The placement of the cross is situated over his heart. Under the cross his hand is extend out of the robe. His hand has long boney fingers with blue veins on the top of his hand. It doesn’t give the impression of someone that is elderly…

The passion and emotion is evident through this piece as viewers can identify the symbolism that is taking place. Raphael used an oil tempura medium with this piece and made use of spacial reasoning with his objects being tied together so fluidly. His use of lighting is perfect with the sun being casted from the right. You can see the sky on the right hand of the painting with more sunlight which leads to the dark silhouette that features a shadow on the left side of the Child Christ and Virgin Mary. His use of lighting and structure completely draws your attention to the main focus of the painting which is the Virgin and Christ who are in comparison very light opposed to the dark silhouette that binds them. I believe this piece was made for a public audience so that it can be used as a tool for witnessing the gospel of the Savior. Raffaello was a nomadic artist that traveled from here to there in different parts of Italy, but for the most part he resided in Florence. The location of Florence was of the most important to the Renaissance and I believe this piece was intended to educate and move his peers through his use of Humanism and emotion. The Renaissance was a centerpiece with…

In terms of the use of light and colors it is clear that light comes into obscurity from both the light on the ceiling and from Jesus’ aureola. Also Tintoretto focuses on motion in his painting bringing the image to dramatic life. How dramatic this scene is engages the viewers in keeping with its ideals where there was use of different devices that noted its asymmetric and complex composition. This artwork portrays the last supper in a whole different approach influenced by harmonious ideals and even goes a step further where it is intellectually sophisticated and almost opposed to naturalistic qualities where it favors compositional tension and instability rather than the balance and clarity of earlier renaissance painting.…

In The Adoration of the Magi, an influence of Greek and Roman art is seen with the individual peeking out of the door. With the heavy build and emphasis on muscle and strength, Fonttebasso shares a relationship with the Greek and Roman’s interest in the human aesthetic. The detail of his body also underlines the naturalistic style of the piece. Along with the fine and sharp lines of the clothing, the clarity of the painting brings the audience a sense of relation as the scene is be realistic and crisp. Fonttebasso focus on detail adds emotion to the scene as each character’s face reveals the interest and admiration towards baby Jesus. Fonttebasso painting is also multicultural as it includes a dark skinned individual and camels, an animal that is not native to western civilization. Furthermore, the painting provides the viewer with a sense of presence in the event as the camel in the background looks onwards towards the spectator. This cannot be seen in A Miracle of Saint Dominic as the audience is given an omnipresent view. Fonttebasso adds fine detail and clarity to invoke the audience into the painting so they may experience the event along with the rest of the…

Although The Adoration of the Magi is considered one of Botticelli’s most acclaimed paintings, it was not until the 1480’s that mysticism and mystery began to manifest in his works of art. Botticelli’s La Primavera was painted approximately in 1482 while utilizing tempera on a horizontal panel. This painting illustrates an allegorical representation of spring, with naturalistic details including the thousands of distinct flowers and trees. Similar to The Adoration of the Magi, there are numerous individuals illustrated in La Primavera, including Venus, Flora, who turns into spring, Zephyrus, the three Graces, and Mercury. Botticelli places Venus in the center of the painting surrounded by the Three Graces and Mercury to the far right with Zephyrus,…

Secondly, the subject of the painting may have been influenced, however the details in the painting were untouched by the Renaissance. To begin, the colours of the people in the painting were realistic. As stated earlier, Leonardo and Andrea took advantage of the oil paints in order to better represent the beauty of the human figure. The beauty of the human figure inspired humanism. Furthermore, the painting depicts a scene where the Angel Gabriel announces to the Virgin Mary that she is to carry and nurse God’s son, Jesus.…

The artist, Carl Heinrich Bloch chose light and neutral colors. Normally in a setting as the Crucifixion, the darker and stormier the colors are, the more anguish is shown. In the oil on copper plate painting, there is an emphasis on the horizon of the sky. All the components in the artwork have a dark colored, yet still earthy and neutral motif versus Jesus Christ who is colored very lightly. This may be because it symbolizes that Jesus Christ is raised into heaven. In the painting, it shows a female lying down in what seems to be a fainting position. This female represents the Virgin Mary as she is shown in distraught over the crucifixion of Christ. In the painting, there is a strong and realistic approach towards enhancing the nailing of Christ’s hands and feet. When looking at his limbs, there is an overwhelming feeling wondering of what Jesus had to experience when he was crucified. There is also a light shining in an outline of Christ’s head as if there is an angel behind him ready to lift his soul and spirit into heaven. For the Savior Jesus Christ to sacrifice himself in such a horrific, yet heroic way, the only place the artist wanted to send his spirit was to heaven. This was done so very well in this…
