Bhakti Yoga Reflection

1) Were you able to completely devote yourself to this person? What did you do to demonstrate your devotion? What did you struggle with?
After taping a picture of my grandfather to the wall, next to a picture of a cargo ship, I gently knelt down onto a cushioned-surface, tightly cupped my hands together in front of my face, and closed my eyes. While I positioned myself in this prayer position, I whispered five sentences in Swedish and repeatedly mumbled them for a span of forty minutes. These five sentences I was repeating were lines from a poem that I created. The reason I wrote them in Swedish was because I wanted to develop a closer spiritual relationship with my grandfather during that moment, since he is indeed from Sweden.

My poem read:
Tack för din vilja och beslutsamhet.
Du har lärt mig så mycket.
Jag har lärt mig att aldrig ge upp.
Även när det verkar vara för svårt.
Man kan alltid övervinna i slutet.

This basically translates to never giving up. Even when things seem their toughest, one can still overcome them with enough determination. Though this was a calming exercise, I found it difficult to remain in the same posture for forty minutes straight without any interruptions. What I took away from this yoga practice though, which fascinated me the most, was that after repeating the same lines over a prolonged period of time, I found myself inevitably repeating them without being aware of it. This must have occurred because I had grown so accustomed to saying these lines over and over again.

2) Did the person you devoted yourself to feel loved? How do you know?
While my grandfather was not present during my practice, he would have certainly enjoyed the entire ritual I made for him. Ever since youth, I have looked up to my grandfather in many ways. He inspired me to never forfeit my aspirations; that I should always strive towards my goals even in the harshest of times. I believe that he would have greatly

It was a chilly day on March 6, 2007. Me and my family were on 495 going to the Holy Cross Hospital with a slight delay of traffic. For some reason, I kept fiddling with my fingers, I was really nervous to see him. We took the exit 31A and we all shifted to the left since it was a sharp turn to the right. My big sister, Maisie, was on my shoulder and we shifted her head fell on my lap. She woke up and asked where we were. “We are almost there Maisie” my Dad said. We stopped at the traffic light and I fiddled with my fingers some more. “Stop fiddling with your fingers!” Maisie whispered to me. In my head, I say “I can’t, he is the first boy of the family, the first! Besides me!” I stopped fiddling and looked at the huge structure in front of me, The Holy Cross Hospital.…

Yoga is a system of techniques that can be used for a number of goals, from simply managing stress better, learning to relax, and increasing limberness all the way to becoming more self-aware and acquiring the deepest knowledge of one’s own self. The core of Yoga’s philosophy is that everything is supplied from within the individual. Thus, there is no dependence on an external figure, either in the sense of a person or god figure, or a religious organization.…

The whole system of Yoga is built on three main structures: exercise, breathing, and meditation. The exercises of Yoga are designed to put pressure on the glandular systems of the body, thereby increasing its efficiency and total health. The body is looked upon as the primary instrument that enables us to work and evolve in the world. Breathing techniques are based on the concept that breath is the source of life in the body, gently increasing breath control to improve the health and function of both body and mind. These two systems of exercise and breathing then prepare the body and mind for meditation, in turn finding an easy approach to a quiet mind that allows silence and healing from everyday stress. Regular daily practice of all three parts of this structure of Yoga produce a clear, bright mind and a strong, capable body (Weil, n.d.).…

My family aboard the boat began to worry for one another safety. We were now in a life-threatening storm on the midst of a furious river. I observed the innocence of a child in my niece as the depressing look of fear surrounded her shivering, cold, wet body. Yet, she remained hopeful and prayed to God for eternal life in Heaven. We cried out desperate prayers while the raging storm pounded our pontoon boat like a boxing match. My grandfather maintained the courage and strength and proceeded to steer the boat in the horrific scene.…

While the assignment seemed like the biggest catastrophe of my fourth grade career at the time, I would not trade the hours spent listening to my grandfather’s stories for anything in the world. Those few hours alone taught me more about hard work and determination than any class at school ever could. I try every day to remind myself of the sacrifices he made for me to be here and have the opportunity to get an education and pursue my passions.…

As I was getting ready to be in the parade, the seamstress was telling me that the doll I was going to carry had arrived. When I tried carrying it, I could barely hold it up. I was a small young girl and I was expected to carry, what felt like an eight pound doll, over the course of about two hours. As the seamstress ironed the last piece of the dress, she picked up a pair of real pearl earrings that were enclosed in a small, soft, blue velvet box. As the needle pierced my earlobes, my ears instantly felt like they were as heavy as the pressured feeling in my heart, because I had an important task I was not prepared for- I was going to carry a heavy doll that symbolizes Jesus as a baby, for a long time, while standing on a moving vehicle, and I did not want to let it…

I felt like I was about to present my grandfather's life in a very vivid way, and show how great of a person he was. Still, there a few things I wish I would have done differently. One thing I would have changed was telling the story about my grandpa’s condition at this point in his life. In my speech, I only said the doctors told him he had few hours left in his life but he overcame this issue. I didn’t give much explanation to what was happening during this occurrence. Instead, I should have talked about he had a blood clot in his leg and they thought he would need his leg amputated, but he couldn’t do a surgery. Luckily, the clot wasn’t as bad as they expected, and he was able to go home. Like every speech I’ve done this year, I also wish I would have used more gestures during the course of my speech. This helps the audience understand my message and keeps them involved. I also think I could have started the speech in a more capturing way. Truly, I’m very content with how things went in my speech, but like anything, there always some improvement that can be…

One Sunday, as I was driving back home from visiting my family, it began to rain. It was just me and the boys and they had finally settled down from fighting sleep and I entered into a place of worship and dialogue with God. He began to take me back to the moment when I wanted to mend the broken pieces of my life and fill the voids with a relationship with my father so bad, that I came so close to meeting him but God blocked it.…

    Ontology and Yoga

When we did yoga on Thursday during class time, it was so much fun. I had never done yoga before and I thought it was going to be hard, but it actually came very easy to me. It worked out every core in my body, especially in the abdominal area. I had imagined before I did yoga that I was going to be out of breathe a lot, but then again I didn’t really know what yoga consisted of. I think we did it, to work out our muscles and joints in our body. Every body is different, so every body had a different reaction to the yoga session. Yoga defines itself as a science – that is, as a practical, precise, and systematic discipline or set of techniques that have the lofty goal of helping human beings to become aware of their deepest nature. It connects us to our faith and self and brings us to peace and freedom during that time. We lose all connections to the outside world and just concentrate on ourselves and who we are. Yoga is more than just an exercise to get your physical body fit and healthy, proper practice of yoga is intended at bringing mind, body and soul in perfect harmony. The reason this fits in with the definition of health is because yoga brings you happiness and you become content with yourself and nothing can bring you down, you feel invincible or that’s how I felt at the time. I felt at peace, and didn’t want the session to end. It was rejuvenating to me and for others as well. You need to go in there with a good attitude, and I think that will make a difference on how you feel when you do yoga. Dr. Bogus was an excellent instructor, and she made the class a lot of fun. Everyone was in tune with what she was saying and didn’t want to stop. For some people it was a little tough for them, but they still got by and they felt happy and worked out. Yoga is a great workout and it will continue to work out the core of every muscle in our…
