Gerald Simoneaux: My Hero
Heroes are not just in comics and movies; these heroes don’t wear masks or capes. But these heroes still seem to have super powers that somehow capture our hearts and amaze us with their abilities. They are the ones we look up to, the ones who make an impact in our lives, and the ones who seem to make everything better to save the day. My grandfather, Gerald Simoneaux is my hero because he taught me that I could conquer anything if I set my mind to it. He not only inspired me to be myself but to be proud of who I am. Every Thanksgiving I was able to see my grandfather. Since I live in Florida and he lived in Louisiana, I wasn’t able to see him much, but every year I looked forward to spending time with him and learning from him.

People read and watch things about heroes all the time because in the deepest reaches of their mind they aspire to be among their ranks. The problem with the average person’s desire to be a hero is that they don’t truly know what a hero is. A hero is able to bounce back from a defeat that would stop any normal man in their tracks, they are inspirational, they gain followers and believers just by doing what they think is right, and they don’t have to be strong, but have to be able to take mental punishment like no other.…

Holiday to me, mean well needed time spent with my family. Now, don’t get me wrong, I see my family a lot- I just don’t see all of them at once. Thanksgiving 2011 brought my family together more than it usually would. It was the year after we had lost my grandfather, and his brother in-law Richard (or Uncle Dickey as my cousins and I called him) had terminal lung cancer, with his health deteriorating quickly. Uncle Dickey was married to my grandfather’s sister, Lois. Pappy and Aunt Lois had the closest relationship of their nine siblings, and they were the youngest. Though Pappy’s family didn’t have very much money growing up, they always had each other. That’s why family was so important to me, because I was taught even when you have next to nothing; your family will be next to you. And so, losing my grandfather and finding out my Uncle was terminal, it felt like I was losing every one.…

The heroes of today are not that different than the heroes of the ancient world. They have goals to achieve, obstacles to overcome, and quests to pursue. Their existence is necessary to inspire hope in generations of those struggling to survive and to find meaning in their lives. It could be said that our admiration and devotion to heroes is because we seek something that we can aspire to, whether it be to improve ourselves, to cope with our flaws, or overcome obstacles and succeed. Two examples of great role models, both past and present, for learning how to overcome obstacles and succeed are: Gilgamesh and Superman. During their obstacle-filled journeys of achieving goals, both heroes experience failure and success. In addition, both heroes receive critical help along the way.…

It was my most memorable holiday for me because all the members in my family were present. During that time everyone was laughing, having fun, and enjoying spending time with one another. The best part of Thanksgiving dinner was food which was turkey and the gravy. The worst part was when one of my uncles took the whole entire turkey leg just for himself and everyone was staring at him with a frown. Later I stood up to get a bottle of water. I came back my and my spoon was missing, I looked to my right and the same spoon I was using was on my uncles plate. My family is very strict on respect, so if I even said anything then they would of looked at me and would of been like look that disrespectful boy so I did not even bother. Despite my uncle doing that I still love and miss him. That was my favorite holiday memory because my grandmother was still alive and all my family still lived in Chicago. Thanksgiving is the best holiday because you notice how thankful you are and how many times in the year how most people are not grateful. How in the blink of an eye one of your family members could be gone just like…

Batman, Superman, and Spiderman are common examples of heroes. They pervade our modern culture from comic books, to television shows, to movies. However, heroes can certainly come in other facets of life besides literature. Benjamin Disraeli, a British Prime Minister, said of heroes that “The legacy of heroes is the memory of a great name and the inheritance of a great example.” Perhaps throughout all of history there is no better example of this than Jesus Christ. He is the embodiment of steadfastness, understanding, and self-sacrifice.…

When I think about what my hero means to me, I realize that most of my special memories and feelings toward my hero come from the little things he does everyday. My hero is not a celebrity or such a recognizable face. My hero is not a national hero or a multi-millionaire. He has never saved me from a burning castle or an avalanche, but he does hug me and tell me to have a good day. He doesn’t buy me expensive or fancy accessories, but he does whisper to me that I’m his special girl. He is just an average, quiet man, whom I honor and respect.…
