Beowulf: Bravery Vs. Fear And Religion
There are many great stories out there from the British Literature. A really good one would be the story of Beowulf. In this story there was a very ugly monster named Grendel, who Beowulf fought because he felt obligated to kill him. After Beowulf killed Grendel, Grendel’s Mother wanted to seek revenge for his son. Beowulf also killed her. In order to better explain the story there was many examples of Heroism, Bravery vs. Fear and Religion.
In the story Beowulf there is many themes that are going on in the story. One that stands out is Heroism, because Beowulf was willing to sacrifice his life to please the king. Beowulf felt the need to help the king because of their past history. The king wanted Grendal dead so that is what Beowulf did. Beowulf has been in so many past fights that he is not afraid to fight one more battle. “I’ve never known fear, as a youth I fought in endless battles. I am old now But I will still fight again seek fame still. If the dragons hiding in the tower to face me” (606-611). Fear was displayed in the story quit often. Beowulf knew that Grendal was not going to use any weapons. To make it fair Beowulf was also not going to use any weapons. “I’d use no sword, no weapon, if this beast could be killed without it, crushed to death like Grendal, gripped in my hands and turn limb by limb. But his death will be burning hot” (614-618). Beowulf was not scared of Grendal like many others were. He did not care if he died the same moment because he felt like he owed it to the King of the Danes. Like stated before Beowulf felt obligated to help the King of the Danes because of their past history, where the King of the Danes helped Beowulf. “And best of them that my duty was to go to the Danes’ Great King” (150-151).     The plot in Beowulf follows the archetypal structure of a Hero overcoming all enemies until he meets his match but still dies a Hero: Beowulf defeats his enemies Grendel, then Grendel’s Mother, then must kill the dragon and in doing so, sacrifices his own life for his people.     To understand the famous Anglo- Saxon hero Beowulf, one must understand the culture that created Beowulf. The Anglo- Saxons were influential, strong, and loyal people.     Beowulf is a very courageous character and recounts his acts of courage to every person who will listen.
