Beowulf Character Analysis

Beowulf Beowulf is an epic poem set in Scandinavia during the sixth century. This epic was originally handed down through generations in spoken form by traveling minstrels. It was finally put in writing during the eleventh century. The poem reflects the culture of the time and the Anglo Saxon era. Beowulf is well known in Great Britain as a hero and great warrior. Beowulf exemplifies the traits of the Anglo-Saxon warrior code which include courage, confidence, and pride. Beowulf is a very courageous character and recounts his acts of courage to every person who will listen. In the poem Beowulf tells of his previous courageous actions in destroying a tribe of giants, defeating sea monsters in the night and returning from battle covered in his enemies blood. Beowulf has come to King Hrothgar to fight an ogre. A monster that has brought misery and death to the Danes for many years. This ogre, Grendel, killed thirty of Hrothgar’s men and caused the great mead hall of Herot to be closed. Beowulf tells King Hrothgar “the monster’s scorn of men Is so great that he needs no weapons and fears none. Nor will I” (lines 262-264) Therefore Beowulf intends to fight the Grendel without his armor or his sword. Beowulf may be so courageous because he believes so strongly in fate shaping his successes in the past. Beowulf believes that if it is his fate to win against Grendel then he will win. If it is his fate to die

during the fight then that is just as God plans it to be. He tells the King that “my hands Alone shall fight for me, struggle for life Against the monster. God must decide Who will be given to death’s cold grip”(lines. 267-269). Beowulf will accept death if it is his fate. Beowulf does fight Grendel and wins. Then Beowulf must fight Grendel’s mother who is seeking revenge for her son’s death. These battles are described in detail as brutal and savage. Beowulf kills both monsters despite their

As the epic poem Beowulf involves arms getting ripped off, heads being decapitated, and monsters being slayed, the movie Beowulf has more of a detailed, twisted view. Beowulf's extraordinary physical strength is displayed during his battle with Grendel, a powerful monster who has fought and killed many Danish warriors without difficulty. When Grendel tries to sneak up on Beowulf, Grendel discovers "himself in a handgrip harder than anything he had ever encountered in any man on the face of the earth" (Beowulf lines 749-752). Physical strength is greatly valued by the Anglo-Saxon culture, and Beowulf is stronger than anything Grendel has ever faced before. Because of his impressive strength, both the Danes and Geats are willing to follow Beowulf into battle and can count on him to lead and protect them. It is evident from Grendel's struggle that Beowulf surpasses the physical strength of the normal human, making him a model Anglo-Saxon warrior. Along with his immense physical strength, Beowulf is willing to seek revenge to achieve justice.…

The monster comes in and our hero drives him off after cutting off some of his limbs, the monster is pretty much dead at this point and does die. He traveled to the Danish kingdom to take care of their problem, a hideous and sinister monster that the Danes called Grendel. None of the Danish warriors were strong enough or brave enough to take on this creature, but once Beowulf heard of this he jumped at the opportunity to take his stab at it. He gathered his strongest and most loyal men and began his long journey by boat across the ocean. Once he got there he spoke to the Danish king and at once said he would slay the beast. You can tell how brave he is when he hears of the beast just using its own hands to kill , so it is said that he would not use weapons he would take this creature on hand to hand. The night Grendel made an attempt to kill Beowulf, it says that in their battle “Grendel’s power had gone. He twisted in pain, and the bleeding sinews deep in his shoulder snapped, muscle bone split and broke. The battle was over, Beowulf had been granted glory: Grendel escaped by wounded as he could flee to his den his miserable hole at the bottom of the marsh only to die to wait for the end of all his days.” (p.24 lines 815-823) He also killed another awful creature that descended from Cain. It was Grendel’s mother who was hungry for revenge. She had come to Herot hall in order to avenge her son’s death. After her raid, Beowulf followed her footprints to the lake where she resided. He gave a speech and was the only warrior who was brave enough to jump into the depths of the lake. He then swam to the bottom and killed Grendel’s mother with a sword made by giants. In Beowulf’s old age he was still young at heart and did not back down from a battle. Something had caused the dragon to wreck Havoc on his homeland and so he defended his land and people. Knowing that this might be his last battle, Beowulf still went and attempted to slay this dragon. This dragon was the one…

Beowulf exercises violence for the glory and treasure of the king; his battle with Grendel is one of the most violent scene in the story. Beowulf does not carry any sort of weapon because he feels that doing so provides him with an unfair advantage over the unarmed Grendel. This shows Beowulf’s heroic nature. As all the warriors are asleep, Beowulf waits patiently. He pretends to sleep when Grendel enters the mead-hall. After Grendel devours some of the warriors, he makes a wrong move and goes for Beowulf. As soon as Beowulf grips Grendel’s hand, Grendel realizes the great strength of the opponent. Beowulf does not let go of his deadly grip until victory is his. According to Tokine’s description of the situation, “A grievous hurt of body that…

In Beowulf one of the main characters Grendel is a vicious monster who feasts on the flesh and blood of anyone who stands in his way. He is considered to be the toughest opponent of Hrothgar and his men. When Beowulf is called to face Grendel, he does not seem fazed by the challenge despite all the stories told about Grendel and his merciless ways. In fact, Beowulf decides it would only be fair if he were to fight Grendel with no weapons, since Grendel uses his bare hands to kill. The lines from this story “ He murders as he likes, with no mercy, gorges and feasts on your flesh, and expects no trouble…” (lines 332-334) perfectly describes Grendel’s ruthless ways as well as Beowulf’s courage.…

    Beowulf Good Vs Evil

There are many debates on why Beowulf chooses to fight Grendel without armor and weapons. Some people interpreted Beowulf as over-confident and careless, however according to the bible, this can be related to Jesus. Jesus can heal people with his hands, thus Beowulf can end evil force with his hands. Consequently, this symbolizes a form of purity in both of the context. Once he defeats Grendel’s mother, the swamp is illuminated more thoroughly, “A light appeared and the place brightened/ the way the sky does when heaven’s candle/ is shining clearly” (2222) This light implied to the Christian holiness and salvation, suggesting that hell has been purged of its evil and sanctity restored. Additionally this portrayed Beowulf as Jesus’ resurrection and transition of age, becoming a wiser man. Furthermore, this is a foreshadowing of an event where Beowulf will receive words of advice from Hrothgar of becoming a great man and a great ruler. In the eyes of the Danes, Beowulf can easily be seen as a messiah, who have came rescue them from the monsters. The character of Beowulf evolves into a more mature character, and most importantly he follows the Germanic heroic code of loyalty, courtesy and pride. When offers with kingship, Beowulf gently decline and support the prince until he is old enough to become a king.…

In Beowulf’s battle with Grendel, Beowulf is extremely confident. This confidence is very apparent in his attitude. When he first comes to Hrothgar’s court, he tells him that he had “firm resolve when [he] set to sea” (Beowulf 22). This confidence is also apparent in Beowulf’s preparation. He chooses to abandon his armor and weapons in the fight. He very dramatically “[strips] from his shoulders the byrny of steel, / [doffs] helmet from head” (23). Beowulf has a huge advantage on Grendel because he is very strong. He is so strong that the people of his country say that his handgrip is equivalent to that of “thirty men’s strength” (15). Beowulf’s confidence is extremely evident as he prepares to fight Grendel.…
