Bens Branch Elementary Classroom Observation
Once again, I was placed in Mrs.Metcalfe who teaches second grade at Bens Branch Elementary. Mrs.Metcalfe took attendance while the students waited patiently on the carpet. After she took attendance, she addressed that she had taken some privileges away from the students because the students did not picked up their mess after having centers and would not follow instructions that the teacher gave. She explained that centers might return for the upcoming school year if they behaved properly. After she addressed the issues of the students, she instructed everyone to go back to their desks and waited till they put their thumbs which meant that they were ready for the lesson of the day. Mrs.Metcalfe went up to the front of the class to use the projector and expected her students to follow what she was doing on their worksheets. …show more content…
The behavior clips were moved down to the color red, in which meant that students were behaving badly and their parents were going to be notified. She later on explained the writing issues that all of the students were doing, that consisted of capitalizing the first letter of a sentence and forgetting to add a period after a sentence. Mrs. Metcalfe related with the students by saying that when she was young, she committed those errors as well, but she learned from her mistakes and advised her students to go back to their work and fix their errors. Before the last minutes of class, Mrs.Metcalfe showed a video over the sources of light. Mrs.Metcalfe gave sticky notes to each student and instructed them to three things they had learned over the video after the video was over. In order to go home, Mrs.Metcalfe told her students that the sticky note was their exit ticket to go home. The students gave Mrs.Metcalfe their sticky notes when the bell

Mr. Pell stops at Amy Black’s desk and answers a question. He moves to the desk of another student, observes the student writing in a workbook, points to something the student has written, and then, in a low voice, tells the student that the response is not correct and explains why. He continues around the room, stopping at almost every desk to make some remark. After about 10 minutes he goes to the front of the room and says, “Class, it appears that several people are having problems with this assignment.…

Blue made sure to see that the students were receiving positive feedback. When each of the students entered the room, they retrieved their binders and all sat down quietly. Each of the students were very respectful to each other in that whenever someone raised their hand to speak, they were the only ones who spoke. There was no character development program or a posted set of rules displayed in her classroom. In her classroom she did the majority of the talking while the students listened and answered her questions. In the high school classroom, there was quite a bit of talking and disruption among the students in the beginning. There were many students who were up and walking around while he was discussing the homework. There was no character development in the classroom. Mr. G didn’t seem tell really be listening to his students, one student had to repeat his question three times. Each teacher provided a way to show respect and understanding to their students, and then the other showed a class room that didn’t have much respect for each…

I have really enjoyed my practicum hours, observing and learning from the counselors at West High School. Many of my observations surrounded graduation and A-G requirements. Several of the counselors were going through the transcripts of their sophomores and juniors to see if they were still on track to graduate. Then, they would call in those they needed to meet with and talk to them individually. The solution for several that I sat in with was to add a zero period class. The counselors took two days to call in all of the English classes. They went over the differences between high school graduation requirements and A-G requirements needed to enter a CSU or UC school. Then, we handed out their transcripts, went over their gpa, and…

Effective instruction requires teachers to be knowledgeable of the content in which they are teaching. When instruction is effective teachers are aware of different learning styles along with the various methods of teaching strategies to meet the needs of the all students. At Deerfield Beach High School we use a common board configuration in our reading department that I feel is very effective. Everyone uses the same terminology along with the same format. Collaborative planning plays a big role in our effective instruction. The learning goal and learning is clearly stated in student friendly vocabulary so that students can understand and own them. Students have a very clear understanding of what the long and short term goals are and what…

“Turn to page three hundred and eight in your excel books”, Said the teacher. What? Shouted the boys on the left. You promised us it was prac today? This is bullshit! A general giggle erupted across the classroom. I felt sorry for the teacher as she and I both knew she was in for an hour of torture. “We only have practical classes once a week, you know that” she said hesitantly. Yeah.. well - that’s shit isn’t it! Said one of the boys. The teacher was beginning to show her frustration but she didn’t reply. She knew they got their kicks out of making her angry so she remained silent. They had made her cry a couple of times this term already. I didn’t see why they liked teasing her; but I still didn’t tell them off.…

On Thursday, September 17, I went to Hillcrest Elementary/Visual Performing and Arts School to observe Mrs. Mary Jackson’s music class. When I got there the students were sitting in their chair and learning about the music notes AGF. I saw two Special Education Teachers in the class and they told me that they were here to help the exceptional students. These notes are short notes and high pitch notes. After the lecture, Mrs. Jackson had the student watch and learn the song “Fiddle Eye Fee” in which it had animal puppets singing. Every time the chicken puppet came on, it would sing “Fiddle Eye Fee” and the teacher would sing along and play the xylophone. After the demonstration, the teacher had each row of students play the xylophone. As the…

I observed Mrs. Bacon’s four-year-old classroom at 2:30 p.m. after they came inside from recess time. Mrs. Bacon calmly in a friendly voice told the four-year-old children to wash their hands and divided the children into two groups; group A and group B. Mrs. Bacon directed group A to go to the block area to play and directed group B to go to the housekeeping area to play. A students named Fernanda Marie stood by the sink and wouldn’t move after Mrs. Bacon repeatedly told her told her to go with her group, group A to the block area, but Fernanda Marie replied to Mrs. Bacon “I’m not moving, I hate this class, I hate you.” Mrs. Bacon calmly walked over to Fernanda Marie got down on her knees looked Fernanda Marie directly in the eyes and told her to go to the writing center until she gives her further notice to leave her area. Four-year-old Fernanda Marie screamed to the top of her lungs screaming for her mommy as she walked over their but she sat down and didn’t leave that area until Mrs. Mrs. Bacon told her to do so.…

There were no African Americans, and few Hispanics. Each child seemed relatively the same social status, and there was a very close ratio of girls to boys. With the classroom having a pretty close to equal amount of girls to boys in it, I think it balanced out the rowdy 1st grade boys to the calmer 1st grade girls. Though, I did not like the way she handled disciplining a child that acted out. Mrs. Collier has a disciplinary system that focuses on ramifications and rewards. She has a point system that can earn them rewards, but if they are bad she takes their points away and it can cause them to get a note written home to their parents about their behavior. Mrs. Collier would make a point to call the student out and embarrass them. At one point during their reading time, we were reading a book that had the theme of kids learning their lesson from their actions. She specifically called out one little girl in front of the whole class and pointed out a time when she messed up. Mrs. Collier told the whole class what her punishment was and said, “That’s why you should never do that class”. I thought it was very inappropriate, rude and embarrassing for the kids. It made me realize that I would never handle a situation like that when I become a…
