Belgium is a very new country compared to the world. Belgium became its own country in 1830 by separating from the Netherlands. Belgium is famous for their gourmet chocolate and waffles. Belgium is very small and roughly the size of Maryland. The exact size of the country is 30,528 squared km. Belgium uses the metric like the rest of the world except America. Belgium has a great population, flourishing culture, a small history, a nationwide currency, a polluted environment, and many unique places to visit. The total population in 2015 is 11,203,992. 58% of Belgium are Fleming, 31% of people are Walloon, and 11% are either mixed or other. There is about 1,775 births everyday and 1,554 deaths everyday. When Belgium separated from the Netherlands, many places flourished including Brussels. Before it got independent, it was the most northwestern place of the Roman Empire at its height. During World War I, the main battle field in Belgium was called "Flanders's Fields". This clearly proves that even though Belgium is new compared to the rest of the world, it still had a big history when it was part of a country or empire that was much bigger. Belgium's economy is relied on transportation, trade, and industry. All of Belgium's oil has declined in price. Their currency, euros, is equal to 1.11525 United States dollars (USD). Public debt hovers around 100% GDP. Belgium is very vulnerable in world markets. In conclusion, Belgium is having a tough time with world markets and oils prices. Belgium's environment is also having trouble with pollution, emission, and animals. Air and water pollution are caused by the many factories in Belgium. In 1996, emission was 106 million tons. There are many animals that are endangered because people are taking away their homes. Also, there is also a massive number of excessive animal breeding.
