Being on Time in the Army
WHY IT’S IMPORTANT TO BE ON TIME

It is important to be on time, both in the Army and in the civilian sector, for multiple reasons. Among these reasons, the ones that stand out to me the most are unprofessionalism, being fired, receiving adverse disciplinary actions, and failing your co-workers/comrades. Being late or tardy to work can cause not only yourself but everyone at your place of employment problems. When being late or tardy, you are showing that you are not a professional. It can also be assumed that you do not care or respect your job the way you should or need to. When your employer begins to think that you are careless with your job or don’t care about your job they can decide that you are no longer a valuable asset to their company. Once your employer thinks you are no longer an asset to their company they can choose to fire you or they will keep a closer eye on you and wait for another reason to fire you. Being late can cause adverse actions to take place. Adverse actions can range from a counciling to an Article 15 or even an early discharge, when in the Army. In the civilian sector it can range from job probation to being fired. In either sector, being late can cause a lot of strain on your job or even cause you to lose your job. This can also affect your life outside of work by causing trouble at home. In today’s world finding a new job is not an easy task. This means that if you were to get fired from your present job you may not be able to pay bills. You let your co-workers/comrades down when you do not show up on time to work. When you fail to show up on time you are causing your peers to have to do your work as well as their own. This can cause the mission for the day to be slowed down dramatically. When the mission is slowed down this can cause your leaders to fail at meeting deadlines that may be needed to be met at a specific time in order to meet other deadlines on missions that may

Punctuality is a very important thing in life. Getting to work on time when you are supposed to, is punctuality. Showing up for a meeting on time is punctuality. Showing up for an appointment on time is punctuality. It is very important to make it on time for work, meetings, formations (ten minutes prior), and appointments. Appointments in this case, are very important to make it to on time. It is best to show up for appointments early. If you leave home early to get to your appointment, it is much less likely you will be held up and become late by traffic or any accidents you may come upon as you drive to your appointment. Missing appointments lets several people down. There are people expecting to see you, you are letting them down. There are people that need to be seen by the people you made an appointment with, you are letting them down by taking up valuable time from a dentist, doctor, optometrist, etc. when they could be there instead of you and having things they need taken care of. In the military, not showing up for an appointment is also letting down your squad leader, your unit, and the whole military organization. It can cost the Army a lot of money to schedule an appointment for you and then have you not show up for it. By missing an appointment, you also show that you lack discipline and responsibility. It does not look good to your leaders and makes it seem like you can not be trusted with simple tasks. Punctuality is a big part of impression and it is very important to make a good impression. When you lack punctuality, it sets a bad example to others, friends, family, as well as other soldiers. If you were not taught in civilian life or learned through having a job, in basic combat training in the military you are certainly taught to show up early and be on time for formations and that should carry over to other aspects of your life, such as appointments. Missing appointments takes away from everyone's very valuable time. There is not excuse for…

Dependability, accountability, consistency and discipline are all crucially related to being on time. Being early also shows that the individual aims high and has their priorities straight. It is directly related to a Marines appearance, combat readiness, mission effectiveness, and essentially every aspect of military life and responsibilities. Your appreance is the first thing that a leader sees, if you have a bad or no shave, no haircut (for males), tardiness, bad physical appearance, druck or hungover to an extreme. Then automatically you have given off a bad appearance, they dont want to go to you for big things, important things, because you can not even handle the…

The number one reason people are fired from their jobs is due to being absent or tardy repeatedly. In my experience as a store manager of a retail business, being absent or tardy not only shows lack of effort it shows lack of dedication to the job. The saying time is money is not far off from the truth. When someone calls in sick or is late to their shift, customers, deadlines, and other employees affected by not having enough employees to get the job done in a timely fashion. These effects can also cost the company revenue that could have otherwise been generated by sales in retail businesses.…

First hand I have witnessed people lose their jobs due to being late or asking for too many days off work. My family owns McGhin’s Southern Pit BBQ, a restaurant here in griffin; I have grown up there my entire life. Their policy dealing with lateness and absences consist of having three warnings which they call write-ups. The first offense is simply a verbal warning, second offense includes three days suspension with no pay, on the third offense your shift will be cut drastically for a month period of time. If the issue occurs after these three steps have been taken you will no longer have a job. There has been many unfortunate situations where employees have lost their jobs due to not being responsible enough to get themselves to work on time, or to come in at all. Now for just a moment think about this, those punishments occurred in a small town, family owned business, imagine if you worked for a larger business or corporation, your consequences may differ depending where you work.…

Tardiness in the workplace is an ongoing issue. Managers should be proactive in combating this “drug” that has taken over our workplace environment. Many things such as dictating your employees’ reporting time in advance, outlining consequences of being late, and dealing with tardiness as it occurs can be done to attempt to alleviate this problem which costs companies billions of dollars in lost production opportunities. In a survey that I conducted, my initial observations involving my coworkers were confirmed as out of 40 surveys that I sent out, almost 30 people responded exactly as I expected. The abuse of being tardy is evident all around us as suspense dates are sometimes not met, tasks are not accomplished, and work orders are not completed. It is only through ones intrinsic motivational determination that his problem can be eliminated. Many steps can be taken to attack and attempt to cure this “sickness”.…

Punctuality shows that you are responsible, trustworthy and can follow directions. Punctuality isn't just an order that the Army requires, but also a good personal trait that is a reflection of a person’s character, it shows that you have personal integrity and self-discipline. While some of us are occasionally late due to circumstances beyond our control, habitual tardiness shows a lack of respect for other people and their time. If someone is late continually that shows that they more then likely do not care about what their NCO tells them. Time is a precious gem that should not be wasted at any cost. If you don't use your time wisely, you can never get it back. It is a very special resource in that you cannot store it or save it for later. Promptness is not only a duty, but is also a part of good manners, it is favorable to fortune, reputation, influence, and usefulness. Lack of punctuality is a theft of someone else's time and a complete lack of respect for others. You should be punctual in everything you do. Punctuality goes hand in hand with military discipline. Recruits are taught to obey, immediately and without question, orders from their superiors, right from the day one of boot camp. Military discipline and effectiveness is built on the foundation of obedience to orders. This is why we are supposed work so well as a team. By following orders from the more…
