Bedford Reader Reflection
Out of all the content in this course I found the Bedford Reader to be the most helpful content of the course, since it covered various writing styles that were assigned in the Writer’s Workshop Essays. Second, the handout that accompanied each assignments such as the Writer’s Workshop and Reading Questions were immensely helpful in providing the expectations of the assignment. All in all, I did not find any of the course content that I considered to be particularly bothersome, since it all revolved around helping the student succeed in the course.

In terms of structure, I found that having various assignments throughout the week helped me keep on task throughout the semester. Making sure discussions, reading questions, and Writer’s Workshop got completed caused me to spend a significant amount of time working on the assignments and checking the syllabus for what was to come next. Ultimately, the fast pace of the course helped me in continually working on assignments, instead of procrastinating until the last minute. Similarly to the course content I didn’t find anything bothersome of the course structure.

These assignments presented a great opportunity to learn about new writing styles that I had not yet got the chance to try out. For instance, I had yet to attempt to write a Comparison and Contrast essay which presented me with new challenges to improve my writing. Similarly, the Reading Questions proved to be immensely helpful in covering information and concepts on various forms of writing. The only activity I felt bothersome, were the timed essays, but I know they are a necessary assignment for an English

    The Bedford Reader Essay

In the first chapter of The Bedford Reader, the techniques of narration and specific narratives are assessed. To begin, a definition of a narrative is clarified, “a narrative may be short or long, factual or imagined, as artless as a tale told in a locker room or as artful as a novel by Henry James” (40). The passages go in-depth into the process of storytelling, picking apart the importance of each piece, and allowing the reader to understand the simplicity of an essay, or in this case, a narrative. The passage evaluates a method of a summary with an analogy, “A summary is to a scene, then, as a simple stick figure is to a portrait in oils” (44). Simply stated, this means that a summary is as effective as a story written in complete and prolific detail. The Bedford Reader supplies the reader with examples and lectures to portray exactly what the detail of the narrative should include, and the purpose of the piece.…

When the semester began I thought to my knowledge that my writing was that of good quality. Though I had a good basic understanding of the format of an essay or letter I still had a lot to learn. My writing changed in many ways such as learning to eliminate unnecessary wording in my thesis, the use of synonyms, analyzing quotes and writing abstract to concrete thoughts or ideas. This Class not only helped enhance my writing abilities but to also better evaluate the writings of others and forced me to acknowledge the rigorous work of future courses in college.…
