Bcs vs Playoffs
Year after year, faithful collegiate football fans gather around the tailgate of their cars in parking lots around the nation and cook mediocre meals that taste delicious at the time because they share it with their fellow fans and season ticket holders. They all live different lives, but on Saturday, every weekend, they are the same, crazed fans that keep coming back to see their favorite team or Alma matter finish the day with a victory and so they can add one more to the win column of their record. Hopefully, they do not have to experience a loss and this year’s team goes undefeated, with a shot to play in the national championship and prove to the country, in one game, that they are the best college football team in America. January 2, 2009, No. 6, Utah prepares for the final game of their season. For seniors and a handful of juniors, this is their last collegiate football ever game so they are going to make the best of it. They have been perfect this season, undefeated. For some odd reason, they are the underdogs, but they have something to say about it. January 2, 2009, No. 4, Alabama prepares for the final game of their season like many other BCS conference teams. They too have players that will be playing their last game today. This season, they have been near perfect, finishing the regular season with just one loss. They are expected to win the game, as No. 4 is a better ranking than No. 6. After the game, Red and White confetti fills the air. But, is it for Alabama or Utah? Of course it is for Utah, fulfilling a true underdog story. The game wasn’t even close. The Utes’ dominated Bama 31-17 and became the first non-BCS team to win two BCS bowl games. The red and white colors in the air disappoint the Crimson Tide fans and teammates alike because it is not their own. Their season ends in unexpected disappointment. Alabama anticipated a win as they are in the more prestigious conference, the SEC, along with Florida and other

In 1987 the National Collegiate Athletic Association (N.C.A.A.) placed its harshest football punishment in history on Southern Methodist University (S.M.U.). The repeat violator rule, also known as the “death penalty,” banned the college from playing football for all of the 1987 and only allowed to play seven games in its 1988 season. They used S.M.U. as an example of what could happen when a college excessively violates N.C.A.A. regulations. The death penalty was the last option for the university because they were already on probation for past major violations with N.C.A.A. ("SMU Football Gets," 1987, p. 1C). The only thing left of S.M.U. after receiving ‘death’ was pick up the pieces and they are still trying to put the sport back together after so many years.…

Alabama Crimson Tide college football team is a better team than the Arkansas Razorbacks for three main reasons: First, the number one team in the South Eastern Conference (SEC) is Alabama Crimson Tide, second Alabama beat the number one team LSU, and the most important is Alabama won the South Eastern Conference championship game for the 2011 season. The number three team in the South Eastern Conference is Arkansas Razorbacks. Arkansas Razorbacks football team was formed in 1894, and the team’s mascot name was the “Arkansas Cardinals” at the time. As for Alabama Crimson Tide, they were once known as the “Thin Red Line.” In 1908, Hugo Bezdek was the first full- time paid coach for the Razorbacks he came aboard in 1908” (“Arkansas Razorbacks Football History,” 2012).…

It’s game night: the two opposing teams fight for a spot to play every college football or team player’s dream: a bowl game and the chance to be champions. To create a victorious team, college athletic boosters travel all around the state recruiting the best players to attend their school and play on their team. What goes on behind the closed doors of recruiting world though, can change the way students and spectators look at the game of college football. Athletic boosters who bribe incoming college freshman to play for their university are subject to a punishment called the “Death Penalty”, a punishment for a one season team probation from engaging in any game play. In the early 1980’s, a university from Texas rose from the shadows and soon became the best team in the Southwest Conference, with a 45-4-1 record. What contributed to their victory included complimentary residences and automobiles, with some monetary reward for every win in the season. The Southern Methodist University 1986 “Death Penalty” was a fair punishment because during the season, SMU Athletic Boosters cheated the system by bribing the best players and having government figures getting involved, yet the effects of the death penalty raises speculation about whether SMU was guilty of receiving the death penalty.…

Week 12 of the college football season was one of the wildest we’ve seen this season. Several of the top teams fell, while one prominent player called out his coaching staff after his team attempted to execute a head-scratching game plan. No. 16 Navy had 12 players get at least one rushing attempt in their victory over Tulsa Saturday, while the leading receiver in Ohio State’s supposed high-powered offense netted just 22 yards against No. 9 Michigan State. Yet, that’s the beauty of college football — It never slights on the wackiness. Below is a recap of the most significant storylines from Week 12 of the 2015 college football season.…

The book Where Football is King by Christopher Walsh is about the history of arguably the greatest collegiate conference in all of sports; the SEC. At the beginning, it talks about how the SEC got started, the original teams, coaches and early memorable games. For instance, when Georgia Tech was still in the SEC, they beat Cumberland College 220-0. As time went on and football started to spread across the country, teams started to branch out and join other conferences and at one point the SEC only consisted of six teams. Rivalries are also a big role played in college football. The most well-known, “southern brawls” are Georgia vs. Auburn and Auburn vs. Alabama (also known as the Iron Bowl). Every year since 1944, there has been at least one SEC school has been ranked in the top ten. I think the first section of this book was to persuade the reader to believe that the SEC is the greatest conference in the country. It has great stories and facts to back up what it is saying. I found this section to be very interesting because it taught me a lot of stuff that I would have never known.…
