Communication is often defined as the transmission of sending and receiving messages; connecting with individuals through the exchange of messages, thoughts, speech, signals, behavior, or writing. Communication can be verbal or nonverbal, written or visual. Oral communication includes spoken words and writing dialogues. Not involving or using words of speech is known as nonverbal communication. Facial expressions, body posture, eye contact, or gestures are part of nonverbal communication. Written communication can be through e-mails, reports, articles and many other ways.
Facial expressions are a form of demonstrative communication. Communicating includes different facial expressions, tone of voice, or body language to deliver the message. A smile is an example of a positive facial expression, and a frown will be viewed in a more negative manner. Some interpret a grin as arrogance, which obviously would have a negative effect. The audience could take this in the wrong manner and create an isolated situation. Depending on the subject that is being discussed it is up to the lecturer to bring out the right facial expressions. If the subject relies on a more serious matter, the lecturer should not frown but instead maintain a serious face to get the point across. If there is a sense of comedy in the discussion or presentation, the lecturer needs to maintain some laughter as well as smiling during the presentation.
Body language is another form of demonstrative communication. Body language can push to be very successful in many situations including social interaction and communication with people. A negative type of body language would be someone crossing their arms. Even if the intention and words are still good, the body language over powers that and the audience still views this as a negative vibe. Another important and effective part of body language is eye contact. When lecturing to an audience,

    Imagine speaking to someone who stood incredibly still, used no facial expressions, and spoke in a monotone voice. That would be wildly uncomfortable for nearly anyone on the receiving end! Demonstrative communication is a large aspect of conversation. Body language, or “nonverbal, usually unconscious, communication through the use of postures, gestures, facial expressions, and the like,” is an everyday part of conversation (body language, n.d.). It is perhaps the most familiar component of demonstrative communication. Small, simple gestures such as leaning back or crossing one’s arms can convey to the speaker disinterest or defensiveness (nonverbal communication, 2009). Another aspect of demonstrative communication is vocal. Again, this component is usually unconscious. Vocal pitch, tone, and volume all play an integral part in what the receiver’s emotions understand and process when communicating. Aside from these standard factors in demonstrative communication, strictly nonverbal communication is an underlying portion as well. A simple nod of the head to convey, “Yes” or a wave of the hand to say, “hello” are commonplace and well understood in most cultures around the world.     What defines communication? According to Collin’s English Dictionary communication is defined as: the study of ways in which human beings communicate, including speech, gesture, telecommunication systems, publishing and broadcasting media, etc. As the broad definition of the word, it is not surprising that nonverbal communication would be mentioned in the official definition. In fact, the use of gestures is purely nonverbal, but often works best when paired with verbal communication. Nonverbal communication is one of the most powerful tools that leaders can utilize in order to be successful in the workplace. According to research done by Cassidy, Kreitner and Kreitner (2010) some 93 percent of communication is relayed nonverbally. Studies have consistently shown that information is often processed not just through word of mouth, but also through the body. An early study done by Harris and Moron in 1991 broke down communication into percentages. Receivers said that only seven percent of the message relayed came through the words chosen. The other 93 percent were broken down as follows: 38 percent went to how you say the message (including tone, volume, and inflection) and 55 percent to nonverbal expressions (such as, but not limited to, facial expressions, hand gestures, and body movement).…
