Course Objectives
The course is designed to provide the student with the following tools:
1. An understanding and appreciation for the fundamental concepts of chemistry. The topics to be discussed are listed in course content below. The material is presented at a level suitable for those students who will be majoring in one of the sciences.
2. A logic-based, problem solving approach that can be consistently applied. We will emphasize chemical calculations.
3. An understanding of how these fundamental chemical concepts can be applied to everyday life and to current problems of relevance in the world.
4. An understanding of what professional chemists do.
5. Topics to be covered include intermolecular forces, properties of solutions, chemical kinetics, chemical equilibrium, acid-base equilibria, aqueous equilibria, chemical thermodynamics, electrochemistry and nuclear chemistry.
Grade
EXAMINATIONS:
There will be three examinations that will be given during the usual lecture period. There will be a two-hour final exam given at the end of the semester. The exam schedule is as follows:
