General Education Goals
CHE101 can be used to satisfy EKU General Education Element 4B and has been designed to address the following EKU General Education Goals:

Students will be able to:
1. Use appropriate methods of critical thinking and quantitative reasoning to examine issues and to identify solutions. (GE Goal two)
2. Analyze the fundamental natural processes of the world and the interactions of humans and their environment. (GE Goal five)
3. Distinguish the methods that underlie the search for knowledge in the arts, humanities, natural sciences, history, and social and behavioral sciences. (GE Goal seven)
4. Integrate knowledge that will deepen their understanding of, and will

A buffer is a solution that resists changes in pH when H+, OH-, or H20 is added. By using standard lab equipment, a lab pro diagnostic tool, and acidic and basic solutions, the pH can be found. By recording the pH while adding a base or an acid gradually to a buffer solution you can find the capacity of each buffer to resist drastic changes in pH. The best buffers will keep a solution from becoming either too acidic or basic with the addition of a strong base or acid.…

ADDENDUM TO COURSE OUTLINE Instructor email: remsenj@sunysuffolk.edu Phone: (631) 851-6824 Office: Sagtikos 110 Office Hours Spring 2013: M Tu Th 11:00 A.M.-12:15 P.M. W 6:00-7:15 P.M. (Virtual) This addendum addresses how I run my classroom and what I expect of students above and beyond what is presented in the syllabus. I also offer tips for success in the course, and advice to help you determine if this course will meet your career goals once you complete it. Please take this information in the spirit in which it is offered: to foster a better learning environment, and to help you avoid outcomes that are not helpful to advancing your goals, whatever those may be. PREREQUISITES AND INTENDED AUDIENCE: BIO 150 is the first half of a twosemester sequence in modern biology. The course is taught at a science majors level and is intended for students who wish to enter the biological sciences, health professions, etc., or who wish to pursue bachelor’s or graduate degrees in biology or related fields. High school chemistry is the minimum prerequisite. MATERIALS: It is recommended that you buy a notebook for both lecture and lab in addition to the lecture textbook and lab manual. Try not to mix lecture and lab notes. STUDY TIPS: Ideally, you should go home and review each lecture’s notes within a day of the lecture being given, and keep this up for the whole semester. Also read the pertinent sections in the textbook. The lecture outlines I am providing you are just that, outlines. They should be used as a study guide, because only topics included in the outlines are eligible for the exams to be given. The outlines do NOT, however, contain every piece of information contained in the lectures. You need to take good notes and study your textbook as well if you wish to do well on the exams. Your goal should be to understand the material such…

    Indigo Essay Example

This is a two week experiment involving transformation of matter where we will investigate the synthesis of the dye indigo, which will be made, isolated by the process of vacuum filtration and then evaluated. Indigo is the name given to an organic molecule with an intense blue color. It has been used to dye cotton and wool fabric, it is commonly known as the source of the color in blue jeans. The synthesis of new chemicals involves different processes. For example, first reactions are performed that generates new chemicals, and then the products are isolated from the other materials present, purified and characterized. The last step involves measurement of the chemical and physical properties to confirm their identity and purity. There are many different ways to make Indigo, using chemical equation, 2C7H5NO3 + 2C3H6 → C16H10N2O2 + 2CH3CO2H + 2H2O, the organic molecules are dissolved in water, a NaOH solution is then added to start the reaction, because Indigo is insoluble in water it precipitates as fast as it forms. The product will be collected by filtration and then will be quantified. By the process of Filtration is when the solid will be separated from the liquid leaving us with…

Abstract: The experiment was about the characterization of a fat/oil sample through three tests, namely the grease-spot test, saponification test, and unsaturation test. The procedures include the use of a filter paper divided into four sections and a drop of vegetable oil in a section; the same was done on lecithin, dichloromethane, and water and was heated. Oil, fat, and water were subjected into a saponification test using NaOH, and acidification using concentrated H2SO4. And lastly, oil, fat and glycerol were subjected into an unsaturation test by adding dichloromethane, and was added with a 5% Bromine-dichloromethane solution, the total volume of the 5% Br-DCM solution was then obtained.…

First of all, I would like to thank our chemistry teacher Mr. Tan for helping us in the necessary things we needed to know in order to finish this investigatory project. Secondly, we would like to thank our classmates in helping us with the investigatory project for without them we wouldn’t have conducted the experiment by ourselves. Thirdly, we extend our deepest gratitude to our parents for being our financers for us to buy the necessary materials we needed for the experiment and lastly, we would like to thank God the Almighty Father for His unconditional love and guidance and for giving us enough knowledge and strength to finish the investigatory project.…
