Barrick Gold
PART B.

1. One organization that I feel has the best longterm position in terms of their stock market price is Barrick Gold. http://finance.yahoo.com/q/bs?s=ABX+Balance+Sheet&annual http://www.barrick.com/investors/annual-report/financial-highlights/default.aspx
The most important factor in any organization from what I learnt is how much it can pay its shareholders in dividends.
Barrick gold has increased per year their annualized dividend US cents per share from 48 cents per share in 2010 to 60 cents per share in 2011 and then a significant 80 cents per share in 2012. As per their website, “Barrick's strategy is focused on maximizing risk-adjusted returns and free cash flow to position the company to return more capital to shareholders over time.”
Barrick gold recorded a net earnings of 3.8 billion and operating cash flows of 5.4 billion. This shows that they are able to generate earnings and cash flow and increase their dividends to their shareholders at the same time. There are several opportunities that they have indulged in such as Nevada that will benefit from billions of dollars of investment in mining infrastructure in the state.
Despite all these opportunities, the gold supply from mines had constraint issues that were due to several factors such as higher capital costs and long leadtimes to build new mines as well as complex regulatory requirements. In order to support the gold market, there were capital investments that were made in order to deliver more. By these capital commitments this eliminated free cash flow generation.
This has caused Barrick gold to shift their paradigm to focus more on maximizing free cash flow and growing rates of return rather than a focus on growth and investing more in capital expenditures. Barrick gold has already deferred over $4 billion in capital spending plans and reduced targets only on the profitable ounces. They have put on hold any plans to build any new mines. In the future, they have

In a previous article on IAMGOLD (IAG), I had discussed why the stock will be under pressure due to an expected decline in gold prices going into the end of the year due to weak gold prices. At the same time, I had also explained that cheap gold prices will continue to spur demand for the yellow metal, while an expected decline in supply on account of a slowdown in gold discoveries will tilt the market balance toward better supply.…

There are a lot of exposures on the gold price such as the political instability, inflation, government policy and new findings in gold mines. If there are no financial contracts such as option, forward or insurance, the firm might need to tighten the financial policies to be more conservative. The film Black Gold was a very interesting and eye opening film. The film focuses mainly on the coffee growers in southern and western Ethiopia. The movie shows closely the journey that Tadesse Maskela goes through to promote his union- Oromia Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union. The union was developed to cut out the middleman in the processes of trading and exporting the coffee beans. Tadesse Maskela also attempts to secure a living wage for the coffee farmers that her represents, and hope to have fair trade for social and economic justice. The union’s goals are to stabilize the local markets in and outside of Ethiopia, to improve the Ethiopian coffee market, and most importantly to improve the quantity of life of the coffee farmers. I find this very important because it really opened my eyes and realize that the farmers make very little or no money at all for every cup of coffee that we drink. The movie shows the drastic challenges that the farmers go through. Children are malnourished, uneducated, bad living conditions, and most importantly their work is not paying off. These farmers work eight to twelve hour shifts and make as little as fifty cents a day. The film Life and Debt showed similar issues like the ones in Black Gold. In Life and Debt we saw how due to regulations from the IMF and World Bank, farmers who produced bananas and milk lost profits due to trade regulations made and that other countries producing it at a lower price. This caused the bananas and milk to rot and the conditions and profits of the farmers worsen. The thing that I picked up form both films is that we need to be more aware of where and how we get what we have. We need to know who is affected through the process of getting this product. It always seems that the little farmers are getting hurt, while big corporations are just gaining the…

To create a competitive advantage, a mine has to properly manage its exposure to gold price fluctuations. This is not an easy thing to do since there are so many factors to consider: when, how much, and how to hedge the gold production. Firms in this industry differentiate themselves based on the risk management strategies they implement. Furthermore, mines should also be able to minimize the cost of gold production along with making large sunk costs. Operating in this sector obliges the companies to make huge investments to create the proper infrastructure to dig and process the ore; therefore, they should be financially stable on order to afford investing large amount of money.…

Black gold examines the coffee supply chain and follows it back to its origin, Ethiopia, which is the biggest coffee producer in Africa. Ethiopia is also the birthplace of coffee. Harvested and drank for thousands of years, Ethiopia produces some of the world's finest coffee beans. Yet, despite the rise of the coffee industry over the last decade, Ethiopian coffee farmers still struggle to feed their families. There are 15 million Ethiopians who depend on coffee for their livelihood. The movie follows Tadesse Meskela for some time, he is the general manager of Oromia Coffee Farmers, which is a coffee co-op that represents 74,000 coffee farmers in the Ethiopia. In the documentary Meskela shows us the process the coffee beans go through before they leave Ethiopia. Co-ops are common in Ethiopia and in the coffee industry; their job is to bargain power to farmers who are often undercut by coffee buyers. The needs of all the farmers and families are looked after by the co-op, while each farm worker owns a share of what is collectively earned. Often, the co-op can only do enough to keep it's members barely fed, let alone afford luxuries such as health care, education, clothing and clean water. The movie directors often cut back to the hardships in Ethiopia.…
