Backbiting, according to Oxford Dictionary is “Malicious talk about someone who is not present.” It originated from the improper attack from the back in the sport of bearbaiting(1). The word in Arabic is pronounced as “Ghibah.” Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) defined Gibah as “Your mentioning your brother with something about him that he dislikes.” Islam considers backbiting as one of the major sins that a muslim person must not commit (2).This paper will cover reasons why it is prohibited, causes, backbiting non muslims, cure, and cases in which backbiting is permissible.
Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) once said, to signify the wrongfulness of backbiting:
“Whoever backbites a Muslim spoils his fasts and breaks his wudu ', and shall come on the Day of Resurrection with his mouth 's stench more putrid than a carcass ... If he dies before repenting, his death is like that of one who dies while considering permissible that which is prohibited by God (3).”
There are two main reasons why Islam prohibits backbiting:
1. Islam prohibits backbiting because it emphasizes on protecting people 's rights and feelings. Gibah could violates people 's rights and hurt their feelings; therefore, it is a serious sin.
2. Because of the fact that it is easy to commit, people usually disregard it and might feel that it is insignificant (2).
Listening to backbiting is also considered a sin and sometimes the listener might be considered as a sinner a well, being in the same position of the backbiter. The messenger (PBUH) said in regards to that that “the listener is one of the two backbiters.” A person could be more sinful if he expresses his interest in the backbiter’s talk. In other words, saying something like “wow,” “Astaghfirullah” or “I didn’t know he would do

Islam is an ill-perceived religion throughout most of the Western world. Once known as a quiet and peaceful religion, the general perception of people from other religions and most of the world upon Islam is quite distorted. Ever since the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center, an influx of discrimination and prejudice towards Islam and Muslims has spread throughout the world. In “Understanding Islam,” by Kenneth Jost, an article about several accounts of how Muslims are mistreated and stereotyped throughout the world, brings up a recent poll within the United States says that 45 percent of those surveyed has an unfavorable view of Islam. The article also states that a CBS poll in April 2006 found that 46 percent of those surveyed believe Islam encourages violence more than other religions. Westerners must recognize the need to combat the backlash of stereotypes and negativity towards Islam within the 21st century. In order to do so, we must first truly understand Islam by comprehending this unique faith and culture.…

I have intended to write about “Islam and Violence” for some time, something I should have addressed a long time ago; I only hope that it is not too late. Before asking you to carefully read all of this, I want to be sure that you do not conclude that I am making any moral judgment or that, even more importantly, I am holding myself above others. I see what I believe is an unacceptable situation and I refuse to sit silently anymore and endorse it with my silence. I am also not going to debate my values, making a career out of further defending my values or opinions, much less stoop to a position where I have to degrade Christianity with equivalent examples to prove my point.…

This essay will begin to give factual details regarding the Islam faith, compare Islam with other Abrahamic religions and discuss common misconceptions and current events that have changed the way the world looks at Muslims and the Islam faith.…
