The idea that consumer culture and money drove human behaviour and thinking in the 1920s can be put to great contrast. One of the most obvious points being Gatsby’s lavish spending and taste for the exotic, and expensive, yet if you dig deeper you realise all this spending was for him to get Daisy, so really it’s not the money driving him, but love. It can be seen that money and consumer culture dominated behaviour and thinking in The Great Gatsby. The way Americans lived their lives was drastically changed between the years of 1920 and 1940. Many different events and advances in technology happened within the country during this time period. Events such as the stock market crash in 1929, the dust bowl of the 1930’s, and, due to an increase in urbanization, the uprising of major cities. Also advances in technology transpired, such as the invention of the radio and Henry Ford’s assembly line. These events and advances are all illustrated in great detail in the novel, Daily Life in the United States, 1920-1940 by David E. Kyvig. His thesis explains that during the two decades, the American life style was changed in such a drastic way that it altered the manner in which the American people lived their everyday lives. Kyvig goes into immense detail about how these two decades changed Americans work and family life, as well as explaining in a great extent how the technological advances impacted the Americans everyday life. In this paper I will examine how class is an articulation of insecurities felt by the American people in the years following the First World War. I will also be writing about the idea of the American dream and corruption of this dream by avarice. The roaring twenties ' is the collective name for these significant years, which would ultimately culminate in The Great Depression (the great depression refers to the collapse of the American economy in 1929. It was an event whose reverberations were felt the world over.) America, which had just returned from the war, was quite shaken up by what it had witnessed on the war front. The growth of cities, the rise in consumerism, and the shift in morals and manners represented the change from the country’s Victorian past. Major cities like Chicago and New York grew rapidly and the Empire State Building began construction, giving the appearance of American self-confidence. There were many profound changes, however the American industrialization and urbanization were the most rapid and unquestionably the most important. Due to the rapid movement of industrialization, so began a movement of urbanization. Between 1860 and 1910, urban population increased sevenfold and by the 1920's more than half of all Americans lived in cities. Appliances virtually revolutionized the lives of the middle and upper class Americans, as did Henry Ford's mass production of the Model T.
