Avoiding Cell Phones in Classrooms

Anything that distracts kids is contrary to a good learning, so why is there a belief that all technology is desirable? Just because technology is available, does not mean we should give permission for students to own a cell phone in the classroom. The cell phone is simply a tool of convenience for us to utilize in our lives. Schools should have strict rules to prevent students from using cell phones in the classroom for many reasons.
The main reason of preventing use cell phone in classroom is that students will not pay attention to the teacher when she/he is explaining the lesson which will affect their academic achievement in school. If students have cell phone, they will play games on cell phones since they are addicted to the games and they do not pay attention to their lesson. Others will go to the internet and watch some movies during the lessons because they have these small devices in their pocket. Moreover, cell phones can be used in cheating. Text messaging is the new note passing. Explain this more...Students can exchange text messages about the correct answers without the teacher’s knowing.
Preventing use cell phone in the classroom is very important because it does not only affect the students who own cell phone, but it affects their friends. It will distract the good students who are listening to the teacher when their friends communicate with them through text messages. Other students can easily be distracted when phones ring or vibrate, and the learning process will be totally disrupted when the students start to send and read messages or make and receive calls during the time of the lesson. All these behaviors will bother the teacher and waste his/her time in advising them to stop working on the cell phone On the other hand, some people feel this is the best way to keep students in contact with their parents in any case of emergency because parents are always worried about their children when they go to school and be able to contact them any time . Graham who is a teacher of writing at the University stated, “ In the Pew survey, 98 percent of parents of cell-owning teens say a major reason their child has the phone is so that they can be in touch no matter where the teen is (a blessing and a curse to students). This business of parents always being connected to their children has wide-ranging implications” (Citation). However, keeping children in touch with their parents is a very weak cause to expose students to the negative impact of using cell phone in the classroom. Parents usually want the best for their kids, so they should understand how it will affect their grade negatively. Also, there is another way to contact them when they are in school. Parents can call the administrator in the office that is responsible for passing the important messages to their children.
In conclusion, cell phone is a very popular device that over 80 million Americans now have cell phones, but it is important to prevent cell phone in the classroom because it has negative impacts on students in all grades (citation). School should have a strict policy to control using them in the classroom. Also, parents and students should be educated about the bad effects of using cell phones in the classroom.
